I've just noticed lots of these critters on the "Snowball" bush in my
yard (New York City). What is more, they seem to be doing something
with a very large number of tiny insects (I think) that "coat" the
tops of some of the branches.

Any idea what they are? Don't worry about telling me if they are
destructive; I hate that bush anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Ladybug nymphs. They are beneficial, not destructive. At a guess, they are
eating the tiny insects (aphids?) that coat the tops of some of the branches.
