How to convert an ex mil Ritchey-Chrétien

I have ourchased at little cost an assembly that could be described as
a Ritchey-Chrétien
telescope.
8in main mirror 5in secondary both with fairly deep concave curvature.
Folded focal length probably about 18 in.
Secondary mirror has a nice position adjustment on a rack built into
the cast light alloy casing on Naval type construction.
Curiosity in hole in the centre of the secondary lineing up with hole
in bigger primary mirror.
Assembly Throws a nice focussed flat field image about 2 in behind the
primary mirror.
No baffles. External light probably contaminates deep sky images.
My eyepieces just seem to show the back of the secondary
What was it for?
Could be to send a laser beam?
