Shingletown Star Party 2008 Registration is Open

Author: Shneor
Date: Jan 31, 2008 21:18

Come join us at the 7th Annual Shingletown Star party from June 30 -
July 7 2008!
Located on an unused airstrip at an altitude of 4,000 feet in Northern
California, this site is in the gray on the light pollution map, and
usually has skies to at least mag 7. There is room for more than 300
telescopes along the airstrip (and the area could be expanded if
needed). Horizons are excellent all around, and the site boasts a
superb daytime view of Mt. Lassen. You can camp out in a tent, bring
your RV, or rent a nearby cabin. You can leave your equipment set up
for the entire week. Shower facilities are available (and included in
the registration fee), and there are many daytime activities to enjoy
in the area. Imagers - we provide power for your equipment. We also
boast a dinner delivery service to...

An event from about 15 years ago.

Author: Rôgêr

I was driving from Knoxville, TN to southwestern VA and it was maybe
11pm or so. Very dark, cloudy night, I was east of Lafollette when
suddenly the entire sky and *all* surrounding land about me was bathed
in light. It was as bright as or brighter than mid-day and slightly
bluish in color, lasting only about a second or so. Much brighter than a
lightning strike and far more area was covered. Nearly instantly all the
electric lights in sight went out. I was really nonplussed to explain,
my first thought that God's own transformer somewhere must have gone
Chernobyl. But no exploding transformer could light up that major a
portion of land and sky.

It wasn't until watching a show on History channel about meteors that it
struck me that must have been what caused this event. My question is, is
there some way to find out if there's a record of this event. I know a
lot of time has gone by, but maybe some observatory may have noted what
happened. Any suggestions, this is just to satisfy my curiosity.

Recommendations for a web based usenet feed for this group?

Author: canopus56

I would like to implement stronger desktop based usenet filtering for
this newsgroup using NewsProxy. To do so, I'm going to have to
subscribe to a web-broadband newsgroup service. (My isp does offer
usenet, but only through a land-line connection.) I'm looking for
recommendations for services.

What do you recommend?

The cheapest I've found at $3 per month is Newsgroups-download. I
would like to use them, but my reservation about this company is that
they have a slick looking website that advertises "killer tech
support". I've emailed them three times on a question and got no
response from their "killer" customer support. Anyone know or use
these people? Are they reliable?
http://www.newsgroups-download.com/

Usenet-access is okay but is $6 per month.

Any other suggestions.

Thanks, Canopus56

will be in the mix also.

I knew it! If someone mentions Kepler they have to be spanked.

INTEGRITY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WILL!!

INTEGRITY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WILL!!! BUT YOU
HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO A LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!!
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you
are now, and
came across an article similar to this that said you could make
thousands of dollars
within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought,"
Yeah, right, this
must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept
reading.

Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and
address
stated in the
article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of
the
list at #6, and
post the article in at least...
