politicians campaigning as if Ethanol is a plus, when it probably will end up as a scandal by year 2010

Was watching some of the Iowa State Fair. Anyone know if one can see
mules and donkeys at the fair?

Anyway, there was talk of building more ethanol plants in the state of
Iowa.

This is the huge problem when politicians tout something that they
really do not have a firm handle on the underlying science. All they
can think about is more money and better economy, not realizing that
the true science behind ethanol is that it will *probably* go bust due
to overcapacity and due to rising petrol prices.

Politicians usually never studied a hard core science. They do not
understand when you tell them that it costs 1.5 gallons of gasoline in
order to produce 1 gallon of ethanol in our modern day petrol based
farming.

So they run for office touting Ethanol and their state overbuilds
ethanol plants. And then the price of a barrel of oil rises and the
price at the pump goes to $5 a gallon.

There is probably a net energy gain in production of ethanol for fuel
but it is not hard to imagine that politicians in a farm state would be
speaking favorably about something that benefits farmers ;)

This issue is purely an American problem.

But, since we give volume discounts and nobody else
does, it's a global problem.

I agree with zzbunker. Every gallon of petrol not used in the U
--is
just one more gallon Europe can gladly pay $9 for. ;-))

Every gallon of petrol not used in the US is automatically used
to Euorpe. Since France is the only country that uses petrol.
