Writing in this month's "Grocer" magazine (1/9/08), food writer and
investigative journalist Joanna Blythman, author of "Bad Food Britain:
How A Nation Ruined Its Appetite"
[a book about our junk food habits] and "Shopped: The Shocking Power
of British Supermarkets" [www.Amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0007158041/
pigdiseaseinfo0c] has
launched an attack on Britain's farmers for excessive use of
therapeutic antibiotics, particularly cephalosporins and
fluoroquinolones, which have risen in use by 10%% and 20%% respectively
according to new government data.

Blythman points out that these (fairly new) families of antibacterial
drugs are amongst the most effective for treating meningitis in
children, as well as foodborne infectious diseases like Campylobacter
and Salmonella. She blames the rise in agricultural usage on intensive
livestock farming methods, particularly keeping large concentrations
of animals in unnatural environments and quotes a Soil Association
(the UK organic certification agency) claim that farm antibiotic use
can be reduced by "up to" 75%% when more extensive husbandry systems
are adopted.

Former President of the UK Pig Veterinary Society, and co-author of
"Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use in Swine" in the 2008 edition of
"Guide to Antimicrobial Use in Animals" [http://www.amazon.com/exec/
obidos/ASIN/1405150793/pigdiseaseinform], David Burch, has quickly
responded [www.octagon-services.co.uk/articles/antibiotics.htm] by
drawing attention to data in the 2008 report of the Veterinary
Medicines Directorate (VMD) which shows an overall 4.4%% reduction in
therapeutic antimicrobial use in UK farm animals over the last year,
and nearly a 14.8%% reduction over the last three years.
He points out "As far as pig and poultry usage is concerned, the VMD
report a fall of 6.8%% since the previous year and 15.7%% over the last
three years."

Burch goes on to say: "The use of antimicrobials, which are on the WHO
critical list such as cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones have indeed
increased. However, in which sector has the increase occurred?
Unfortunately the report does not specify. If we look at other
countries' usage patterns such as Scandinavia and France, where
recently they have been reported by the European Medicines Agency
(EMEA) (2008), 69%% of cephalosporins are used in pet animals (dogs and
cats - a growing market in the UK), 16%% are used in
dairy cows to treat and control mastitis and 15%% are used in cattle
and pigs for the treatment primarily of respiratory infections such as
pneumonia, by injection only. There are no oral forms (feed premixes
or water solubles) of cephalosporins of any generation licensed for
use in cattle and pigs in the UK. In an earlier report VMD (2007)
showed that the consumption of cephalosporins in man was 39.8 tons and
in animals 3 tons, a ratio of 13.3:1. If we then divide it further
into cattle and pig use the ratio increases to 88.4:1. An additional
section of the EMEA document reports on a survey of Escherichia coli,
used as an indicator organism for antimicrobial resistance, from
poultry and pigs and showed that there was no resistance to 3rd
generation cephalosporins in the UK. They also reported on Salmonella
species from cattle, poultry and pigs and S. Typhimurium from cattle
and pigs and again showed no evidence of 3rd generation cephalosporin
resistance."

"For the fluoroquinolones, the picture of usage is less distinct.
However, VMD (2007) reported that in humans quinolone use was 14.7
tons and in animals only 1 ton a ratio of 14:1. It is hard to break it
down further into different species use but use in pet animals is also
significant but probably not as large as in food-producing animals,
unlike the cephalosporins. Oral formulations are available as well as
injectable formulations in food-producing animals. In the Veterinary
Laboratories Agency (2007) annual survey for 2006 of Salmonella spp
(4331 isolates from food producing animals) there was only one isolate
resistant to ciprofloxacin (the human test fluoroquinolone) from
poultry (0.02%% of isolates) and none that were resistant to the 3rd
generation cephalosporins, cefotaxime and ceftazidime directly used in
human medicine."

Burch concludes "The EMEA, VMD and our own Pig Veterinary Society
(PVS) warns its members to use antimicrobials prudently, and on the
results so far, they appear to have done a good job in taking this
advice and preserving the safety of our food."

Hello everyone.

Recently I've been interested into hydroponic agriculture. I've been
reading about it, and it has sparked my interest. I'm even considering
on building an hydroponic plant for growing -say- lettuces.

Of course, that would be in time, after I learn enough to risk my money
into such enterprise. At the time, I'm building a little hydroponic
garden in my home.

I've been surfing the web about this topic, yet all I've found is like
an overview. I haven't found anything technical about it, say, how-to's
and such.

Does anyone have any resource recommendation (digital or printed)? Also,
tips and advices are most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services
----------------------------------------------------------
http://www.usenet.com

Rock elm cuttings no go, but sour cherry cuttings are going

A few months back I started to make rock-elm cuttings and for a spell
there, was having signs
of success. Come to find out that the stem had enough energy to burst
out a bud, a latent bud, but
the buds never leafed fully and when I inspected for roots there were
no roots. So enough latent
energy in the stem for a bud but no new roots.

I also cut branches from my favorite sour cherry tree and decided to
stick them into potting soil
without any hormone acid treatment. To my surprise several of them are
now budding out with
leaves. The buds look so good that I am confident they have roots
also.

I am at the stage in my landscaping of these grounds where I am
multiplying the growth of
trees and hedges that I favor as per fruit production. I am kind of
sad that 7 years ago I planted
"wild plum" for 6 rows and only 5 plum trees of a proven cultivar. I
am not going to get one single
good eating plum from the wild plums. But my Waneta plum tree is now
producing 5 good plums
for eating per day.

So my chore now is to slowly make cuttings of the fruit trees that are
doing well and replace the
ones that are nonproductive.

The same goes for my grapevines. I have three rows of 4 vines per row.
One of them is very sweet
and large and without seeds. So I am going to try to make cuttings of
them and replace or make
new rows of that particular cultivar.

I suppose this is what goes on in every successful orchard is the
continual replacement and upgrade
from nonproductive to that of good tasting productive. But I do not
know if I am going to have
the time to see it as a mature orchard. This is the sort of thing that
a young person and a family-on
the-farm sees through in generations of work. Where one generation
gets the thing up and going
and can see a future-perfect-orchard surrounded by productive woods.
And where the future family
generations fill in the gaps.

I would like to see rows and rows of productive shrubs, trees. All
pretty and all productive.

In my earlier years when I did alot more travelling around the world,
I often had flashbacks of my
life of where I was fulfilling that "perfect orchard". So when I was
hot and sweaty in the Caribbean
or tired and frustrated in Europe I thought of the time of building
that perfect orchard. So whether
I actually complete my "perfect orchard" does not really matter so
much as that I can complete
it in my "mind sake".
Actually I found this weeder tool several years ago when fixing a
water line using a tongue-groove-pliers
and then walking back to the house and seeing thistles along the way
and using those pliers to pull the
thistles.

There is no finer weeder than a large pair of tongue-groove-pliers. A
weed that has a single stem can
be pulled up from its entire roots. Yesterday I used the pliers to
take out baby locust trees the size
of my little finger. Some snapped at the base, but several came out by
their entire roots. And it matters
not if the soil is wet or dry.

They are super effective on thistle.

What makes the pliers so effective is the fact that the grip is tight
and the pulling upwards only tightens the grip
even more.

Thistles are a breeze to pull out by their entire roots. Burdock that
has a single stem is easy. Stinging
nettle is especially vulnerable to the pliers. Some weeds
do not have a single stem and thus they are immune to the pliers.

So if you have a pair of tongue-groove-pliers, not the ordinary pliers
but the tongue-groove, then try it on
your worst weeds who have a central stem. Watch how easy it is to
weed.

P.S. the other day I saw a show on robots for agriculture designed to
weed. Their idea was to spray
some herbicide. But I think some may be able to rig a robot with these
pliers and have a mechanical
means of removing weeds. So if they design a robot weeder running on
solar energy and equipped with
tongue-groove-pliers and whenever it spots a weed with a stalk, then
go for it.

Archimedes Plutonium
www.iw.net/~a_plutonium
whole entire Universe is just one big atom
where dots of the electron-dot-cloud are galaxies

For years now I have complained about chokecherry as not being suitable
for canning and not suitable for harvesting since the fruit is so small
and pits so large and in fact poisonous if enough swallowed. So
chokecherry was on the borderline of practicallity.

So what changed my mind so abruptly? Well it is because I can utilize
the juice of chokecherry for other canned fruits and then save the
mashed up chokecherry, put in refrigerator and use my mouth and tongue
to separate out the pits. Carry around a small spittoon and so fully
utilize the cherry in the chokecherry.

If you ever seen the juice of chokecherry it is very pretty purple-red.

And the flavor of chokecherry is a good cherry flavor. So when sour
cherries are not available, chokecherry is a good substitute. And they
are easy to pick and easy to prep.

However I have a question about picking chokecherry. Maybe someone knows
what this is. The chokecherry come in what I call "drupes of fruit". And
I noticed on some drupes as if a whitish appearance, sort of like a
spider type webbing. Maybe it is some worm type webbing. It seems to
cover an entire drupe of chokecherries.

So what is this whitish film on chokecherries? Anyone know?

Archimedes Plutonium
www.iw.net/~a_plutonium
whole entire Universe is just one big atom
where dots of the electron-dot-cloud are galaxies

Well apples and pears usually are the bulk of my canning, especially
with cinnamon applesauce. But this year the pears are few, for them
seem to be biennal in production capacity. One year huge, next year
sparse.

The apples are large production this year however, due to hores, llama
and alpaca, I am having to compete for apples. I normally just pick up
fallen apples on the ground, but these animals are cleaning me out
before I get there. And the horse especially. The horse seems to know
what trees are apple trees and makes them the priority rounds of the day.

But there is good news about apple canning. I will have more than enough
apples to can. The bad news is that 75 percent is going to have to be
crabapples. Not much fun in prepping crab apples. But one thing good
about crabapples is that the color of their skin can tell you if ripe
enough.

As for the regular apples, I pick the fallen to the ground ones and
depending on their color I either wait till ripened or cann immediately.
I am adding currants and chokecherry juice to the apples so it is quite
a delicious mix.

All organic.

Archimedes Plutonium
www.iw.net/~a_plutonium
whole entire Universe is just one big atom
where dots of the electron-dot-cloud are galaxies
