You keep missing two important points.
1) the octane rating is higher for ethanol than for gasoline. This
means you can design the engine to use higher compression ratios
and/or more turbo boost, which means the carnot cycle is more
efficient.
2) alcohols can be made with renewable technology, so burning them
does not increase green house carbon dioxide.
