Segmentation of Knee Tissues from Optimized MRI Sequences
Proposed work:
Computer-assisted preoperative planning and simulation of the Total Knee
Arthroplasty (TKA) requires accurate shape modelling of the knee joint. This
involves the accurate segmentation of both bony and soft tissues structures
of the knee. In this concern a method for automatic / semi-automatic
segmentation should be developed to extract the femur, tibia and their
cartilages out of optimized MRI sequences of the knee joint. Implementations
along with qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the proposed method
are further aspects of this work.
A good background on image processing essentials, image processing tool
(such as MATLAB) and programming (C++) is desired.
Aspects of the work:
- Literature research
- Algorithms development and implementation
- Evaluation

Analysis and Correction of MRI Spatial Distortion
Proposed work:
The accurate representation of anatomical structures is essential for
quantitative analysis of the biomedical images and for preoperative planning
of surgical interventions that require high localization precision. In
applications where these aspects have to be performed based on Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) the geometrical distortion of the Data should first
be assessed and carefully corrected. The aim of this work is to study the
geometrical distortion in MRI and develop methods to correct it.
A good background on MR imaging and image processing essentials and on image
processing tool (such as MATLAB) is desired.

- Literature research
- Methods development and implementation
- Evaluation

Segmentation of Musculoskeletal Tissues from Optimized MRI Sequences
Proposed work:
In the framework of a computer-aided system for pre-operative surgical
planning and simulation of the shoulder corrective surgery, automatic /
semi-automatic segmentation algorithms should be developed, implemented and
tested to extract the bony and soft tissue structures in subject from
optimized MRI sequences of the shoulder complexity.
A good background on image processing essentials is required. A background
on image processing tool (such as MATLAB) and programming (C++) is desired.

Rotoren (z.B Flugzeugpropeller, Hubschrauberrotor, Windkraftanlage etc.)
Bei Interesse meldet Euch einfach bei mir. Weitere Themen sind nach
Absprache möglich.

Master-Thesis
Topic: Biomechanics of the wrist
Background: The human carpus is a complex joint system with difficult
kinematics. It is composed of eight very different shaped bones and a
complex of several different articulations. Understanding carpal
kinematics and its biomechanical function is of clinical relevance for
e.g. hand surgery.
Aspects: Design and development of a biomechanical evaluation system for
visualiziation of the carpal bone movement.
Knowledge: Experience in programming (C, C++; Matlab), interest in
medical engineering
