Hi,
What is the best home DVD player out there with HDMI and plays DivX,
but is not too expensive? Any site with a list and comparisons? Thanks.

Apparently this unit does not support DTS audio. Not a deal breaker for
everyone, but be aware....

The Philips 642 does support DTS, but I'm not particularly in love with
its image quality on a 52" screen.

Further research indicates that DTS can be enabled with a firmware
patch.

Here's the thread I've been reading.

Sorry - you're looking in the *player list* for DTS? It's not a player,
it's a sound encoding scheme. see videohelp's glossary...

No argument there - but if it lacks functionality, new is not
necessarily better.

As I found after the post you quote, it *looks* like a firmware issue.

Any computer running linux and mplayer :-). I can't tell you how much time
I save because mplayer can just go directly to playing the damn movie
and bypass all the annoying ads and warnings and animated menus that
take 4 hours to finish drawing the buttons so you can tell it to "Play".

Will such a setup really give me HDMI? Optical/Coax digital audio?
Component video?

I'm using my Westinghouse LVM-42w2 1080p monitor as both a TV display and
have it hooked to my computer (via DVI). I've also got the optical digital
audio running out to my receiver, and I can play widescreen DVDs with
mplayer doing the scaling up to fill the screen and sending the audio
out the optical connection.

Of course, it was a pain the the patoot to get it all working :-).
For instance, here is the obscure gibberish I need to use to play
most DVDs:

Look at the Oppo players at www.oppodigital.com. Google for reviews of
the players.

I have an OPDV971 playing on a 3-year old JVC 52" rear projection
television with the included DVI-HDMI cable. Wonderful improvement in
picture over my Pioneer DVD-R progressive player. The upconversion is
very near High Def. I have not tried playing DivX in the player, but
it does play PAL as well as NTSC and there is a very simple hack to
make the player region free. The audio is great giving great sound
seperation and fidelity to the stereo.

I am planning to purchase the DV-970HD model for my new Visio 42" LCD
television. The Visio uses the Faroudja chip like the OPDV971, so I
plan to play it on the safer side. The 970 also is HDMI only, which is
a good match for that television.

Oppo has a reputation for responsive customer support and easy firmware
upgrades.

Ah, I see.

That's surprising, actually. It's about as ubiquitous now as component
video.
