Hi,
I started the eurailpass thing after I was 26 (heh I was an adult
college student too)... so I had to get the first class passes...
I never did the supercheap live in a backpack with an unlimited
eurailpass sleeping on the trains every night thing.
but I've done the 5 day flexipasses several times successfully (that is
to say it was a better deal than buying separate tickets).
I'd do an Amsterdam>Munich>Florence>Paris>Amsterdam or an
Amsterdam>Paris>London>Amsterdam... and in those days (not to long ago)
there was still an overnight train with couchette between Amsterdam and
Paris (last train out of both) and I'd do most of the jumps as
overnights with couchette (and I was entitled to a 1eme class couchette
where they existed... I got a 3 person sleeping car from Florence to
Paris) so the overnights were really pretty comfortable.
what I've never done, and a eurailpass gives a discount on, are the
ferry's from france <> ireland... that I want to try.

I find that rather surprising. I've tried on several occasions to
justify the cost of adult passes compared to single
point-to-point fares. The only way I've been able to do it is by
using those high fares shown on sites like Eurailpass, and then
only if I plan to spend most of my time on trains.
There are so many "deals" on rail fares in Europe and those fares
on the websites are only the full-price fares. They seem to be
chosen to make the passes look good.

For instance an interrail pass valid for a month costs 599 euros in the
second class and 809 euros in the first class. Many shipping companies offer
discounts in European routes. Also one can utilize the pass in commuter
train networks in several countries. At least in the past the pass gave free
rides in the German S-Bahn networks. All in all I find the product
reasonable. I have made...

My plot was, and still is when I travel alone, to get a flexi-pass for
enough days to cover long train trips, particularly ones where I'm
changing them often, and individual tickets for short ones. Prices
compare well that way. Second class and never Eurail, of course.

that reason doesn't count.

FWIW I cannot figure out why anyone would disagree with you. Never the
less I have had clients insist on the passes, why? Because they are
scared silly of walking into a station and buying a ticket. So I keep
telling my clients, I can make a commission on this but you don't need
it . . .
