I have heard horror stories about how slow the Passport
Processing Center in Philadelphia can be but, after suddenly
realizing that my passport had expired, I downloaded the online
form DS-82 ( http://www.state.gov/m/a/dir/forms/) and submitted
it with the old passport, pictures and check. Even after
receiving the form back since I had forgotten to sign it, the
whole process took three weeks.

I had no problem renewing in France. It is done by mail working
through the Embassy and I don't think it took two weeks.
I thought it a bit pricey.
The problem is that it works via the internet which makes
it difficult for the non-adept, equivalent to getting
an electronic ticket.
At 76, the new passport will probably be my
last one.

Thank you. My US passport expires soon, and I've wondered how long it
might take. ...
