My wife and sister-in-law are going to Rome in November, and they keep
reading about the organized rings of pickpockets.
What are some good strategies for not becoming a victim.
I used to take a second "fake wallet" with a few dollars, some inactive
credit cards, etc., as well as an expired passport. These were used as
decoys, though I never had any problem (this was in Hong Kong where it's
a big problem like Rome).
I told them that the pickpockets leave nuns alone, so they should dress
up as nuns when they go out, but I don't think they believed me.

Why bother?
If you're that worried just buy one of those 'bikers wallets' with a chain,
clip it to your pants belt loop and carry the wallet in your front pants
pocket.

The belt loop is a pretty weak link in that.

I've always done this, and I've never worried about my wallet being
taken from me.

Maybe they should dress up as gypsies?

No, they should put all their stuff in shopping bags and push it
through the streets in a shopping cart.
