In one month we (2 couples) will spend 2 1/2 days in Budapest and
will stay at the Medosz Hotel in the city centre (next to
Oktogon). We have never been there. Because of the short visit, I
would appreciate help with designing a program that would allow us
to visit and do things that are a MUST. One of the things I found
out is that we could catch the ending of the Wine and Champagne
festival. Help anyone?
Thanks a million - gA

I'm just back from a trip to Hungary, ending with two days in Budapest.
Day one was spent on approx 6 hrs in the Buda Castle district, including
the Royal Palace and St Matthias Church, ending with a visit to the
Gellert baths.
Day two was of similar length, in the inner part of Pest, from the
houses of Parliament (tour with english guide at 10AM & 2PM), lunch at
the Gerbaud Cafe, ending up at the Covered Market.
I still only scratched the surface and might go back for 5-6 days to see
more of the sights
as usual, I used the Michelin green guide (of Hungary) as I find their
maps and itineraries the most straightforward.

Thank you, Sarissa. Was the Gerbeaud as good as they say? And, did
you try any of the restaurants in the Market Hall?
Thanks for your comments.

I found the cake at Gerbaud not very good, I'm afraid, and overpriced
(plenty good deserts around there!) Are you thinking of the 'sort-of'
takeaway places upstairs in the Market? It's 'fast food' in that
everything is already cooked, but it's very cheap and we were very happy
with what we had there. Just a bit crowded (we were there in July '05),
so you had to fight a little to get a seat.

Thanks for your comments, David. About the Market Hall I read:
"There is a very good self-service restaurant (Fakanal Etterem) on
the first floor, where locals shop. It's a rustic-looking café'
with red-checkered table clothes, which offers a complete choice
of traditional and tasty Hungarian dishes. The portions are
enormous and unbelievably cheap. A bowl goulash soup alone will
probably keep you going for the day".
Cheers, gA

Been there. Went again. Yes, it's good. Very informal. Self-service,
and only a few high tables with some stools
-- you might have to
stand.
I don't greatly care for goulash soup, but I really liked the
goose-leg.

OK- I don't remember seeing that- but it's probably just my memory, as I
did have a walk around. Based on the food I had there, I would believe
the review!
