Is all of Italy closed on April 25?

Author: Gord Pope

Hi, I am arriving in Livorno on April 25 via cruise ship for a 1 day stop so
that those passengers who have not done so can visit Florence and Sienna and
all the other Tuscan biggies via the super expensive cruise ship shore
excursions. Since I have visited those places several times myself, I'd
like to do something different and explore Livorno and points south.

But...

I have heard that April 25 is a major Italian holiday and everything is
closed. Including some car rental places and perhaps many museums and or
other interesting places to see. Can any one tell me if this is true and
what we can expect to find open on this holiday?

Our plan is (was) to rent a car and drive south along the coast to see the
various villages and Etruscan sites. Has anyone experienced this holiday in
Italy before?

I have also emailed the Livorno tourist agency to get their input.

Thanks for any info.

Gord Pope

No, actually, it's not free.

If you enter, you give up reproduction rights for the photographs that you
enter, even if they don't win. Those rights are presumably worth something,
so entering the contest isn't free.

  Cause of Mercury pollution found

Author: Billary Clinton
Date: Jan 31, 2008 12:15

http://www.flandersnews.be/cm/de.redactie.english/news/080130_mercury

Wed 30/01/08 - The FMM factory in Anderlecht which processes used
batteries was the source of the high mercury concentrations. The
Brussels Environment Minister Evelyne Huytebroeck (Francophone green)
had the factory shut down last Friday as a precaution.

Since last Thursday, mercury concentrations of up to 9300 milligrams
per cubic metre were measured, which poses a threat to public health.

According to Evelyne Huytebroeck the problem did not pose any hazard
to the people living near the factory.
(Photonews)

Toxicologists however refute this and say that an investigation into
the health risks of the high mercury concentrations is necessary
before such conclusions can be drawn.

"We must find out how long the factory in question has been burning
batteries," says toxicologist Jan Tytgat of Leuven University.

"If we screen the factory workers we can find out a lot. If they do
not have high mercury concentrations in their bodies, the people
living in the vicinity of the factory probably won't either."

Factory 'known' by the environment police
