In a few weeks I will be cruising down the Volga from Moscow to St.
Petersburg. I know that the ship has only sketchy net facilities, so am
wondering if I will be able to pick up my emails via cellular (or
reliable & safe wifi) while I am in the various towns we will be
stopping at.
(Otherwise, I will rent a sat phone.)
Anyone have direct experience?

I last did this cruise in 2003, but at the time there was NO internet
service via satellite, and even cell service was very spotty along the
rival and canal (Stalin Canal). Russia did not have not have the rural
cellphone coverage that most european countries have then, and I doubt
that it does now, though I could be wrong. As I recall, the only cell
coverage we got was in Moscow and St Petersberg. Even Internet cafes
are pretty scarce.

No direct experience, but I have lookedat the gsm world coverage maps of
Russia and do not like what I see. There are a large number of companies
with local service, no appearant national coverage companies and a lot
of empty space. It looks like the 5 year old report may be accurate. Sat
phone may work, but is it worth the cost?

You might try rec.travel.europe (though they have more trolls and
insult artists than rtc there are still some pretty helpful folk in the
mix)

Mobile service is spotty and crappy. What they call 3G isn't even 2G.
As far as using an internet cafe? Not on your life. Not my laptop
(with encrypted data, secure email service and encrypted messages) and
definitely not on their infected boxes.
