Hi Everyone,
I received this letter from Mark Conroy, President of Regent Seven
Seas and thought it would be of interest. If you have missed any of
my news' postings, they are available on my web site.
Best regards,
Ray

Dear Traveler ,
The issue of smoking on board cruise ships has become quite a hot
topic in our industry. And while Regent Seven Seas Cruises is
respectful of the lifestyle choices of our guests and will always give
smokers a warm welcome, we also recognize the need to restrict where
smoking is permitted so as not to cause discomfort to, or provide a
health or safety hazard for, the majority of our guests who do not
smoke.

Charles, I'm delighted to see that the cruise industry is beginning to
listen to the non smokers and finally take some action. Where are you
getting the news about other cruise lines are going to adopt this policy?
I'd love to read more on the subject.

It is a rumor that I saw on some other forums and heard when I was
talking to some industry people on board a ship. The end of the year
was mentioned. The fire hazard is a major concern following the Star
Princess fire. I have seen nothing official and it could just be a
rumor with no legs. This change in policy at Regent seems to give the
rumor some plausibility.

This is incorrect. Here is HAL's smoking policy:
http://www.hollandamerica.com/guests/category.do?category=obpolicies&topic=smoki...
"Smoking
For the comfort of all of our guests, designated smoking and nonsmoking
areas are available in most lounges. Smoking is not permitted at any time in
dining areas. Our ships do not have "nonsmoking" staterooms; however, all
rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each cruise to assure the comfort of our
guests. All showrooms are nonsmoking during performances."
I expect that we are going to see a lot of changes in this area within the
near future.

Hi Everyone,
The above is completely incorrect. HAL SOES allow smoking in all
staterooms and all balconies. I hope this is not the information your
sister the travel agent gives out. <:+(

That sounds about the same as RCCL & Princess except for the staterooms &
balconies. The Regent seems to be much more restrictive- almost the same a
the Paradise was except that they'll have a designated smoking area.
On our CP cruise last Feb they had one evening (until 10 PM) where the
casino was smoke free. I think they must have been testing the waters. It
still smelled of stale smoke but at least you could breath.

Hi Charles,
I don't think maritime regulations can be changed that quickly but
time will tell. The president of Royal Caribbean has told me and
others that we should expect some changes to their smoking rules
"sooner rather than later".
Best regards,
Ray
