Cruise Review
Queen Mary 2
6 Night Westbound Transatlantic Crossing
June 2, 2008
Southampton to NYC
--Why.
Last August, Linda and our 2 kids did a Transatlantic Crossing on the Queen
Mary 2, and they all loved the ship. When they got back, Linda said that
since I love ships so much, I needed to try the QM2.
In February 2008, I booked a 3 day/4 night mini sailing on the QM2. We had
2 days at sea and 1 day at Princess Cay in the Bahamas.
The QM2 isn't a traditional Caribbean type cruise ship. She's as much a
history and art museum. There are a lot of exhibits on the ship detailing
the history of Cunard, of transatlantic crossing in the past, and of ocean
liners in general. Spending 2 days on her wasn't enough time to explore
much of the ship. So I decided to do a Transatlantic Crossing on her and
invited some friends.

Welcome back, Tom! I loved reading your review. Thanks for all of the
details, esp. the Chef's Galley and Todd English experiences. It will
be fun to hear Charles' and Mark's take (was Mark doing a back-to-back
w/ the QE2, or am I dreaming?). Also, Ermalee should be back from her
voyage and reporting, too. I think she did the hoity toity version,
didn't she?!
We should've taken bets on how you'd manage the stretch of days at
sea. I would've lost--I thought for sure you'd return a convert. I am
glad to hear the daily lectures were good. That is such an important
element.
What did Jonathan think? What kind of demographics did you note on
this voyage?

We had dinner together in Rome where our trips intersected two days
prior to Mark and Steve joining QE2. It's one of the really nice
things about RTC - you never know where in the world you'll meet up
with friends from the newsgroup!
Sorry to hear about your cold and rainy crossing. I've done crossings
that have been sunny with calm winds. The North Atlantic can be quite
unpredictable.

sounds like you had a nice time. the ship sounds very nice and you're
right, you need the time to explore.

LOVED the review, Tom. Thanks for a great sense of what the ship is
about. You did a terrific job of explaining the layout without being
confusing. I was able to picture it in my mind (and wish I was there!).
Can't wait to hear Charles and Mark's perspectives.

Anyone who has been fortunate enough to hear Maxtone-Graham would have
to agree. We heard him on our recent South American trip on the Star
Princess. Did you see the skit he did with his wife, Mary?
We got to hear him twice since our cruise was a B2B.
Enjoyed your review.

Jonathan is a very smart young man, good choice(grin).

Do you have any pictures of these areas?

Thanks Tom - Great Review. I promise to get mine together in the next
few days.
I pretty much second everything you say except:
- i LOVE crossings and did not miss port calls
- Todd English experience was somewhat better and Dining Room service
slightly worse.
She is a jaw-dropping replacement for our beloved QE2 and it was an
unalloyed joy to take her on the North Atlantic route for which she
was designed.
