We are thinking of going to Germany and N. Italy next year, perhaps Holland,
and would like advise on the best river cruise in that area. Has anyone
experienced the Mosel and the Rhine? Pros and cons? Thank you.

Viking is great. In addition it's highly rated by readers of Conde
Nast. Viking offers many cruises and itineraries. Check out their web
site and see if it's right for you.

Both VANTAGE and VIKING offer some good cruises on these rivers. We took a
13 day Danube cruise on a Vantage ship last year. We went from Vienna to
the Black Sea and Bucharest. The service was wonderful; both on ship
entertainment and off ship tours were great. The tours are included in the
pricing with Vantage, and I believe Viking has the same type offers. Don't
think you could go wrong with either of the ship lines.

As you are Canadian, you should look into Jerry van Dyke Travel, based in
Ontario (Oakville, I believe). They do a full spring and fall season on the
Rhein, Mosel & Danube. Their river ship is state-of-the-art and they own it
(or lease it), so their European riverboat cruises are 100%% their own travel
group. They are VERY all-inclusive. All expenditures on-board are in
Canadian dollars. They have a strict no-smoking policy. They used to have
bicycles on board that you could...

I can't speak to the cruises, but I can speak to "cruising" via auto
along the Mosel from Trier to Koblenz, then the Rhine to Cologne. It is
gorgeous. Miles and miles of hillside vineyards, cute villages, some
castles up on the cliffs. I loved the area. I wish I could have spent
more than a long weekend there. I would go back in a heartbeat.
The only "con" that I could think of would be the demographics of the
passengers. Be sure you check on that. What part of N. Italy are you
thinking about?

We went to China with Viking and thought it was the most seamless travel we
had ever done - nothing but the highest praise for that trip. We were less
happy with Viking on a cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest...

Our main objective is a River cruise in Europe and we wish to combine it
with a visit of Countries that we have not seen, such as Germany and
Holland. A Danube cruise would have been fabulous, but we have already seen
Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.
Cheers, - gA
