can I take BA to court?

Four months ago BA left me stranded in Rome after canceling all
their flights. I had to find my way back to Canada without any
assistance and this cost me a lot of money in purchasing other air
tickets, hotels, taxis, etc. BA acknowledged the problem at first
but refuse to answer any of my follow-up correspondence. What's
the best way to deal with this? Has anyone ever been in this
situation? Is there an authority on these matters? Should the
Canadian Court have jurisdiction on this?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Unfortunately, you've not told us enough with which to frame our advice....

"BA left you stranded...."

Somehow, especially to those of us who fly often, it's difficult to believe
that BA made no attempt to provide alternative routing/transport. You had a
paid ticket, with which BA likely offered to book you on later/future
flight on BA or an alternate air line (or by another routing).

The relevant regulation is here (PDF):
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2004:046:0001:0007:EN...

Useful to print out and keep with flight documents!

Martin.

Martin, I thought I had given just enough to enable someone to
help me out. I did not give details and I do this now, hoping that
someone will help me, as a last resort. I have BA's acknowledgment
in writing, then nothing! This is my original letter to BA:
**************
British Airways - November 14, 2007
1. On October 22, 2007 my wife xxx and I started our return trip
from Catania to Edmonton (AZ 1736). Alitalia advised us to check
our luggage directly to Edmonton since we were traveling on one
ticket, under the BA direction. Our bags would go through Customs
in Edmonton.

2. Once in Rome we went to the BA counter to get our boarding pass
to go to London (BA 553) but found no one at the desk. A notice on
the counter advised that the personnel could be found at another
gate 'loading' a plane, and to find out which one. Upon checking
the airport monitor we saw that all BA flights had been canceled.

In simple terms they have to offer you another flight or your money back.

They don't have to give you the choice.

When it happened to me I found myself on another flight on the same date but
a bit later.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

We were offered no money, no assistance, no other flights. We were
told (by way of a handout) "..we're sorry but we encourage all
passengers to find their own way to heir destination.."
Unbelievable but true!

If your'e on the return leg they do,
