POTF & Classic figures

My 7 year old has been (politely) nagging for an X-Wing Luke to go with
his X-Wing fighter. He got his X-wing a year or so ao - it looks
pretty much like the one I'd gotten when I was 7, which was designed
for the classic figures, so I'm assuming that the form factor is the
same. I'd rather get a figure that's carded and less likely to look
like it's been sitting in a ziploc since the Reagan administration.
Will those musclebound POTF figures fit in these vehicles, or should I
stick with getting one of the old (and slightly worn) 1978 figures?

Just how interchangeable are they?

If you wait long enough then Hasbro will probably re-re-re-release that
figure.

You could always buy a Jorg Sacul figure instead. ;-)
