Scott Johnson Named Eagles Head Coach

BOULDER, Colo. ? USA Rugby has officially announced that
Scott Johnson,
the Sydney born former fly half/center, who most recently
held the
Attack Coach position for the Australian National Team, has
signed on to
a four year contract as the new U.S. Men?s National Team
Head Coach and
will make his American coaching debut as soon as his visa is
approved.

As Richard Loe observed, if Collins's 'tackle' on Reid had been any
higher, it would have missed him completely. If you can't get cited
for that, you can't get cited for anything.

One can only assume the citing commissioner in play here is Collins's

Interesting article in South Africa's Sunday Tribune regarding the re-
election of Oregan Hoskins as President of SA rugby. Not being a
regular follower of the unique politics of the situation I'm a little
confused as to what exactly the 'third force' is, but I'm guessing
it's supposed to be a group of white guys in Pretoria and Johannesburg
pulling the strings and preventing the sport from progressing to
become more 'Africanised'.

Can anyone confirm or correct my suspicions? And what's the reaction
in South Africa? Do people actually think he has a point, or is he
just being bitter about his defeat in the election?

For the world-will-end crowd, can you help explain which of the ELVs you
think is bringing emminent death to the sport, or which ones may be
acceptable to adopt?
Below are all the ELVs being used in the S14 (I think):

1. Corner post is not out
Can't see anyone getting bothered about this. I never understood why the
post was considered out in the first place.

2. Can't pass back into the 22 then kick out on the full
This rule always used to shit me. Why be allowed to pass it back to the 22
but not run it back. This rule makes sense. No world ending yet.

3. Quick lineout can be passed straight or backwards
I thought this was always the case anyway. Maybe not in the official rules,
but in practice. Current Threat Level is still Green

4. Backline must be 5m behind the scrum
One of the big changes. This gives the attacking backline a chance to attack
rather be strangled by rushing defence. For traditionalists, this actually
brings the game back to the traditional pre-90's era when defence wasn't so
good and attacking backlines had time to think. A good rule to bring back
attack-oriented gameplans IMO
