Two questions: If you want to eliminate all the variables that introduce an
element of unfairness into a 2k multi-lane course, why not just race on an
erg? Or race in a rowing tank?

Or why not eliminate the 2k multi-lane course and all the rules that pertain
to it, and race longer courses in open spaces where everyone has to deal
with the same variables? Of course you wouldn't be able to compare 2k times
over the years with open course that varied from race to race? But you might
have more interesting, challenging courses?
