  New Rowing Book

Author: boatie
Date: Aug 29, 2008 07:51

Shameless plug.
Mark de Rond has written an interesting book about a year he spent
following the daily fortunes of the Cambridge Boat Race Crew.

Rowperfect is selling it (apparently it's not for sale in the USA - go
figure?)
http://www.rowperfect.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=93

I met Mark through the Judge Business School in Cambridge where he
lectures and researches on group collaboration and competition and how
alpha (male) personalities work and fight. This seems a perfect
summary of the melting pot that is a boat race selection camp.

I race you for my seat in the boat - but once there, we have to
collaborate to make the boat go fast and beat the common enemy.

Anyway, it's £17.99
there have been some nice reviews in the FT, Times, Guardian and
Independent

  Re: Boathouse Manager needed

Ewoud,

The really interesting thing is that in the years I have been sculling out
of OWRC we have had two General Managers, Ellen Braithwaite and Dan
Alexander. Both Ellen and Dan have been outstanding General Managers, or
Boathouse Managers, I don't know what title describes their duties
accurately.

But even more importantly, both have the personal qualifications the Club is
looking for, and both have met the description of responsibilities the
advertisement asks of them. We have just been very lucky. We have had two
clearly exceptional people.

I would not hesitate to tell anyone thinking of applying for the job to
bring their own shoes. Dan's shoes are just too big to fill.

Cordially,

Charles

Something alike by our Dutch W8+. They did a 'pimp my boat'. Too bad
it's in Dutch, but I thought it would be nice to share it with you
guys.

  Black Power and Harvard

On the TV (UK) last night there was an interesting programme about the
black power movement in the Mexico Olympics with quite a bit of
content from Hoffman(I think) from Harvard and the US 8+ and the (some
positive)dynamics between the black and white sportsmen.

Question for Carl - steering a pair

Author: KC
Date: Aug 27, 2008 13:34

Anyone can respond (obviously) but I'd like to hear Carl's take on this:

Carl, since you designed the aerowfin rudder/skeg system, you've
apparently put some decent amount of thought into this.

I often find myself disputing the claim that a pair is faster with a
rudder than without. Many people seem to think that if one person is
slightly stronger, it's better to let them row all out and apply a
little rudder than to row sans rudder and force said rower to back off a
bit.

My analytical intuition says that it would always be faster to row such
that you don't need a rudder, even if that means one person backs off a
bit. But I've not done any actual analysis of the problem. With older
less efficient rudders, it was obvious. But with a highly efficient
hydro-lifting rudder, I wonder if it's less clear cut now.

So I'm curious what you would say.

All of this is assuming no wind, no current, just less than perfectly
matched rowers trying to make a pair go straight.

IME, I've always removed rudders from all pairs I've used or coached. I
think rowers learn to row better that way.

  Sporting Honours

Author: coach
Date: Aug 26, 2008 05:33

Our prime minister has jumped on the olympic band wagon and suggested
that our medallists are likely to be appearing in the honours lists
later this year.

Whilst in no way wishing to belittle the efforts made by our winners,
should not the honours system be there to recognise those who would
otherwise be forgotten. Our coaches, Physio's, Mechanics/boatmen etc
have helped place these athletes on the top of the podium. These
essential members of the team are unlikely to be appearing on the
breakfast TV sofa or be seen endorsing the lattest sporting fashon
wear.
