What sort of a way is that to run a regatta?

Author: Henry Law
Date: May 11, 2008 08:11

Much was made in the Munich commentary of how "easy" (ahem) it was to
win from lane 5 or 6, and how futile (and/or heroic) crews' efforts were
from lane 1 or 2. What sort of a nonsense is that? They go to enormous
lengths to ensure split-second start and finish timing, and rules exist
to try to ensure that the boats are pretty similar ... but the pond
itself turns the whole thing into a lottery.

[UK only] Anyone have trouble with BBCi for the rowing coverage today?

Author: Henry Law
Date: May 11, 2008 06:43

The times I've watched BBCi before it's been fine, but this time it was
unwatchable. Fractured sound, together with clicks and squeaks (no, I
don't mean the commentary) and worst of all frozen video, often for
thirty seconds at a time. I missed the exciting final of the M2x; all I
could hear was the pitch of the commentator's voice rising and rising
and I knew that Germany must be coming up fast ... very frustrating.

Is it just me, or my locality?

A long shot, I know, but just wondering if anyone knows of a place to
row near the "...Peninsula Papagayo, located 45 minutes west of
Liberia, capital of Guanacaste Province...." Thanks.

  Hyperthermia, firsthand

Author: Charles Carroll

Sometime Thursday afternoon I managed to strain muscles in my neck. As it
was explained to me, my right arm was pulled hard while my left arm was held
on to. It was a sharp, quick jerk, the pain subsided very shortly, and I
thought nothing of it. But late that evening I began noticing an annoying
little crick in my neck, the sort of thing that causes you to turn you neck
and shoulders simultaneously.

Throughout the night the crick became worse, and in the morning while
shaving I realized that I had strained a muscle. It was not a big deal. I
had done this before.

So thinking that everything would improve in a couple of hours, I popped
400mg of ibuprofen, a muscle relaxant, then went down to breakfast and
worked through the early morning. The pain did not get any worse, but I did
have a lot of stiffness and a concomitant loss of range of motion.

But I decided I would go sculling anyway. The plan was to start out sculling
gently. If things improved, I would continue; if not, then I would come back
in.

It has been a therapeutic method that has always worked for me in the past.
To relieve muscle cramping raise your heart rate, get blood into the muscle,
dilate the blood vessels, and just warm up the area in general.
