Strong Local FM Broadcast / MFJ 259b

Author: dykesc
Date: Mar 30, 2008 18:34

The manual on the MFJ 259b warns that strong local broadcast band rf
can cause problems with accuracy of the unit. The warning mentions
strong AM broadcast signals. A new tall tower near my house is
emitting a strong FM broadcast signal. When I hooked up my G5RV to the
frequency counter input on my 259b, it immediately locked on at
100.500 MHz. The signal is so strong that I can hear the station at
multiple frequencies when I tune across the FM broadcast band on a
small FM radio. Could this be interferring with my attempts at getting
reliable R-X SWR readings on my G5RV with the 259b?

  BNC Crimp Tool and crimp-connector

Author: J. Mc Laughlin
Date: Mar 30, 2008 11:24

Dear Group:

It appears that I may be compelled to crimp BNC connectors far out in a
field.

I searched the many thousand messages I have saved that were of value and
found this from Mr. Brian Kelly from August 3, 2003:
If you're going to spend money, then be sure to buy plugs with a captive
pin and pressure-sleeve ("top hat") cable clamp.

They are more expensive than the original MIL type, but much better for
hand assembly and much easier to remove and re-use... in other words,
they're good long-term value for amateurs.

An example is the Tyco/Greenpar 1-1478401-0. There should be a
disassembled picture at www.farnell.com/uk - search for part number
3977754. (The parts aren't laid out in quite the right order, but you'll
get the idea.)

Personally I wouldn't use crimp connectors without the correct tools to
make the full six-sided crimps in the two different sizes required. Also
they cannot be re-used, which makes them poorer value for (most)
amateurs.

  Icom AH-4 Tuner question

Author: Ed_G
Date: Mar 28, 2008 20:06

If anyone here has experience with the Icom AH-4 antenna tuner, I have
a simple question. Is there any reason I can not extend the control line
beyond the 10 meter length that Icom supplies with a new tuner?

Just checking before I order one.

What sort of capacitors can I use in parallel in making some 7MHz and
3.7MHz wire wound traps?

What voltage should they be and is the value that important?

Max power will be 200 watts.

Thanks

  Hamstick dipole for 80m

Author: JN
Date: Mar 25, 2008 05:05

Hamsticks and their clones are for US 75m (4MHz) and not directly tunable to
80m (3,5 MHz)

I plan a Hamstick dipole for Digimodes and CW for say 3560 kHz.

What is the best way to lower the resonance frequency
Some type of capasitive loading at the end of base(coil) section
or an inductance at center wich could maybe also function as impedance
transformer?
What is the feedpoint resistance of Hamstick dipole?

Any ideas or experiences?
