  Drinkwell Fountain Shelf-life?

Author: jmcquown

How old is too old? For the drinkwell fountain, I mean :)

Before I left for SC in January I'd drained and cleaned Persia's Drinkwell
fountain, including removing the motor. But I'd already noticed it had
gotten harder and harder to remove the motor to do a thorough cleaning. It
just didn't want to twist out as easily (and yes, I cleaned it completely
each time).

When I got back home (the fountain had been drained and unplugged since
January) I couldn't take the motor out of the housing at all. I tried and
tried and nearly broke a finger off! LOL So I simply removed the impeller
blade from the motor (without removing the motor) and brushed out the
insides, avoiding immersing the base while I cleaned the fountain. Refilled
it, plugged it back in and Persia has been happily sipping ever since.

I guess this one is about 4 years old now. Is it time to replace it? How
long do these things last?

  Why I like animals best

Author: Granby

I just heard on NPR radio that they arrested a man in Florida for throwing a
bottle of gas or something and starting a fire in a dry field. Someone like
this, well I can't imagine what should be done to him. The homes, the live,
the animals he has hurt. If one person comes on here and says that this is
an illness and we shouldn't judge, I will.....implode or something.

  Rotary smurgling

Author: Daniel Mahoney
Date: May 14, 2008 11:37

I don't recall whether I've described Ranger's unique method of smurgling
before. But he has been rather prolific of late, so I thought it warranted
another description anyway.

We have several smurglers in our house. They do the usual - wait until a
human has a blanket over them, then climb atop the blanket and suck or
chew on the blanket while kneading it.

That's not enough for Ranger, though. He waits until one or both of his
humans are in bed. He comes up to the middle of the bed and begins to
smurgle like any other kitty. Once he gets going, though, his hind end
starts moving. His rear walks in a circle while he is kneading. He will
start out facing towards the head of the bed. He then rotates clockwise
until he facing my side of the bed, then continues his rotation. He
usually makes two to four complete revolutions before he is done.

A rotary smurgling session is usually completed by exercising his
blanket-master skills - he steals my top blanket and drags it out into the
hallway.

Does anyone else's kitty use this bizarre smurgling technique?

  Mint Tea

Author: jmcquown

Mint is similar to catnip, is it not?

I've been sick with a sinus-something for the last week. This morning after
Persia's early morning play-session I made myself a cup of spearmint tea
with honey to soothe my throat. Persia came up, nose twitching like a
rabbit, to sniff the tea. She was absolutely fascinated by the scent. She
stuck her face in the mug. Fortunately she's not one of those cats who
jumps on tables or tips over mugs/glasses. Otherwise I think she'd have
gotten a face full of scalding hot tea.

I think she likes mint. Funny, in all the years she's been here she's never
really shown an interest in mint until now. (I do know the losenges I've
been using for my sore throat are of no interest.)

My Snuggle Bug Got the Zoomies

Author: jmcquown

As you may well imagine, since I got home Persia has been a velcro-kitty.
With the exception of thunderstorms (we may get more today) when she hides
in the closet, she's been pretty much by my side every minute. And at her
(surmised) age of 8 or 10 she's pretty laid back (read: lazy).

In the wee hours of the morning she got the zoomies. She was stomping on my
head, giving me head butts, nipping my arm, anything to get my attention.
Wake up, wake up and play with me! Wha...? Persia, it's not time yet! She
didn't care. She chewed on my hair. Stuck her cold wet nose in my ear and
purred very loudly. Chattered at me in that weird sort of meezer voice of
hers. Get up, get up, I wanna plaaaay! LOL

I grudgingly got out of bed and tossed some mousies and a crinkly mylar ball
for her. She was having a blast, chasing them around. Me? I was
Zombie-Mom.

Must be some sort of kitty hormone that kicks in at her age. She reverted
back to near kittenhood. She's doing this a lot lately. I could chalk it
up to the weather, or just being glad to have me around again. But she so
rarely got the zoomies before I left. It's good to see even if she did wake
me up at 4AM to play!
