Pharoah Sanders - Karma
John Coltrane - Ascension
Albert Ayler - Live at the Village Vanguard
Y'know, sometimes a body just needs to hear that 'challenging' jazz
from the late 1960s that sounds like bears have been let loose with a
bunch of musical instruments with clear instructions to create as much
mayhem as they can.
REM - Acclerate (natch)
I love about half of it. I don't mind about a quarter of it. I still
think Sing for the submarine, I'm gonna DJ, Man sized wreath are
clunkers
Alison Krauss & Union Station - Baby now that I've found you
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
Fairport Convention - 'Liege and lief' live at Cropredy 2007 bootleg
Dave B's brother runs a splendid Yahoo group called
whatevershebringswesing. You'll either understand the relevance of
that or you won't :-) I picked this gem up from there.
Pat Metheny - lots of stuff First circle, Bright Size Life,
Watercolors....
Dave Matthews Band - Listener supported
This guy doesn't mean nothin' on this side of the pond and, while, I
don't reall rate him, this is a nice sounding record.
Betty Lavette - I'm in love
Recently back in the spotlight after that great collaboration last
year with the Drive By Truckers, this is a collection of her stunning
1960s singles on the SSS label. An *astonishing* voice.
Doris Duke - I'm a loser
A soul classic recorded in Macon GA in Duane Allman playing in the
band.
Indigo Girls - Become you.
The first record with our boys is really good but this record is IMHO
their finest work
Neu! - Neu!
I was playing this - their first record - on a loop a month or so
back then I found out that Klaus Dinger, their drummer, had died. if
you don't know this Dusseldorf band and are even slightly intersted in
classic german electronic music, you could do worse than start here.
Hallagallo is a prime example of the "motorik" metronome beat that
became such an influence on Brian Eno, Sonic Youth and a million
others.
Joe Gibbs - African Dub Chapter III:All Mighty
Another legend who died recently. I dusted off this slab of vinyl
that I bought as a student in Birmingham in 1977 when I heard the news
and it still sounds as punishingly primeval now as it did then. Dub
reggae at its best.
Shirley Collins and the Albion Band- No roses
There's been a programme on BBC Radio 4 about Shirey Collins and her
song collecting trips with Alan Lomax so I was prompted to dust this
one off too.
Free - Fire and Water
I was talking to Andrew about this band last weekend. Still sounds
great!
No time for Black Sabbath, Ozzy or Tony Iommi I'm afraid.
