I'm feeling some of this too. Maybe Eric does have the right idea,
playing it only once a day.
Since I want to hear them rock, I keep skipping the slower songs, so
I'm sort of saving part of the album until later. Maybe that'll help,
maybe not.
AFAICR, this is the first release for which no one has said that you
have to keep listening so that the songs will grow on you.
Oh, hell, you ones who don't like Submarine should keep listening to
it -- it'll grow on you!

Gasp! Can I put this on my resume?
It's ended up that I've played it even less than that. Just 4 plays
since buying it a week ago Tuesday. (Part of it is I have a pile of
stuff lying around unplayed that competes with it.)

I think it's now official ... we R.E.M. fans are just getting old and
crotchety. Do the right thing: Eat yer oatmeal, order your dia-beet-
eez supplies from Liberty Medical, and don't overdo the new R.E.M.
album!
I dunno, I'm still listening to Accelerate nightly, and if it's now
getting "familiar," I'm still enjoying it more and more all the time.
I'm even starting to wish some of the songs were a little longer.
Something did, however, take a little of my glow away, and that was
finally watching the DVD last night ...
I'm familiar enough with the recording process to know it's
(especially nowdays) a lot of tedious patchwork, but. Peter, in
particular, looked about as inspired by his work as a plumber called
in to unclog a toilet line on a day he'd already made golf plans. It's
surprising the overall aura of the album is as energetic as it is,
given the apparent ennui in the studio. I know, I know ... when you've
been at it as long as these guys, you have your own process down pat,
but it just really looked spirit-less and mirth-less.

i'm only halfway thru it (short drive to the train station :) but i'm
also liking it--maybe because i'm just so relieved to hear that the
guys still got "it."
reminds me of monster and NAiHF with overtones of AFTP. and a few
citrus notes in the aftertaste. ;)

Didn't Peter say about ten years ago that he's no longer interested in
playing guitar?

My reluctance to play the fuck out of Accelerate has to do with what
happened with Neil Young's Freedom. When that album came out it had just
about the best non-punk protest song in ages and I just kept flipping it
over and playing it again, sometimes 3 times in a night. Did this for
about 4 nights in a row. Then a friend from out of town visited for a
few days. When side B was over he'd mumble "flip it over and let's play
that thing again."
By the time he left I couldn't listen to "Keep On Rocking In The Free
World" again for about 10 years. It's an extreme case, but ever since I
tend to avoid overplaying new stuff, especially when it's chocked full
of refined sugar & low on fiber & complex carbohydrates.
Oh wait, that was my breakfast,

I'm right with you, and I've seen similar stuff said on quite a few
blogs. Every time I heard it live, I hoped they were getting it out of
their system. What makes liking it now even weirder is that the studio
version really isn't much different from they way they played it live
in 2005.

I haven't had a haircut in over a year. It's only in the 80s today,
but I'm thinking it has to be chopped off soon.

Actually, and maybe it was me being vaguely crabby about all the pre-
release hype, I felt disappointed the first couple times I played it
on 4/1. Definitely the first listen was "Oh, okay, nice enough. Hm."
But I've been liking it a lot more since then, and more each listen --
something extra started to kick in for me around play 4-5. (I think
the only R.E.M. release I was completely floored by on very first
listen was Reckoning. All the others took a few plays to etch
themselves into my heart.)
I don't listen to the new disc more than once a day, though. (I've
never been much for the CD repeat button in general.) Last week's
rotation included Accelerate, the old Led Zep box set, and the
Spinanes' Arches and Aisles, interspersed with NPR talk.
Speaking of which, the Fresh Air interview last week was pretty good
-- I wouldn't have taken Terry Gross for much of an R.E.M. fan but,
for her, I thought she was on the verge of fan-girlish. Which was
nice.
