Debbie Allen. Sign up for Allen's mostly-monthly e-mail blast-drop her
a line at ReggaeRhythmsNow@aol.com - and you'll find the region's
sprawling reggae calendar laid out like an illuminated text."

them is information on music happening almost every night of the week,
and details on upcoming conferences, concerts and festivals.

Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited
Fans of world music, African jazz, rock, reggae and classic R&B alike
appreciate the powerful melodies of outspoken Zimbabwe musician, Thomas
Mapfumo (Mapfumo means Spears). His new release, Rise Up, (Now out on
Peter Gabriels Real World Records) is a tour de force musically, and
continues the political and cultural crusades that have gotten both him
and his music banned in Zimbabwe. Beloved by the people in his native
country, and more popular for over 2 decades than its president, his
new release now takes the world by storm. A joyous combination of
musical styles from hip-hop and raga to rollicking township dance
grooves and refracted glimmers of reggae and R&B - hes created an
exciting new genre all his own called Chimurenga. Few bandleaders
anywhere have been as relevant to the lives of their people as this
self-styled poet of the righteous, and few will deliver such a moving
musical event.

Ba Cissoko from Guinea
A trail-blazing quartet of young Guinean musicians, Ba Cissoko creates
high-energy contemporary African music, combining the crystalline sound
of the kora, a traditional 21-string harp, with deep vocals and killer
percussion. The result is an electrifying rock-and reggae-influenced
sound that injects the age-old music of West Africa with a groovy urban
edge.

JOE HIGGS MUSIC AWARDS
Marcia Higgs and the Higgs Family Connection, representing
JOE HIGGS MUSIC, is well pleased to announce that your artist Malachi
Smith has been nominated to be the proud recipient of Reggae's
Prestigious: JOE HIGGS MUSIC AWARDS (JHMA).

The 1st Annual JOE HIGGS MUSIC AWARDS, established in honorable memory
of the late, legendary "FATHER OF REGGAE," JOE HIGGS, is scheduled to
commence at 4:00pm on Friday, December 8, 2006 at the KOVENS CONFERENCE
CENTER, Florida International University (FIU) Campus in Miami,
Florida.
Your anticipated presence is greatly appreciated.

WHO WAS JOE HIGGS and WHY WAS HE DUBBED
"FATHER OF REGGAE"?
According to reggae music history, in the early 1950s through 1960s
when it was virtually impossible for the residents of TRENCH TOWN and
other neighboring communities to even be considered for a "real" job in
Jamaica's main-stream work force, it was JOE HIGGS that these
underprivileged ghetto outcasts would ultimately turn to for musical
guidance. Though a youth himself at the time, this self-taught musical
prodigy would convert his 19 THIRD STREET, TRENCH TOWN, tenement
backyard into a sort of musical training camp where he would teach his
peers some of the lessons he had learned. These music lessons or
"jam-sessions" as they were commonly called, were often rigorous in
voice technique, breath control, harmony structuring, effective
song-writing, and of course, learning to play the 'box' guitar by ear
or sound.
In a 1980s interview with his writer, Roger Steffens, JOE HIGGS
explained, "We basically did everything by ear or sound as I myself did
not know anything about music notes at the time. I didn't know "C" from
"D" from "G" but I was very much aware of sound." HIGGS would later
educate his students on the copyright law as well.

Most of JOE HIGGS' students went on to become musical giants, each in
their own respect, and some have later accredited him for their musical
success. Among those he tutored were BOB MARLEY, BUNNY WAILER, PETER
TOSH, JIMMY CLIFF, JUDY MOWATT, DERRICK HARRIOTT and the WAILING SOULS.

His most successful student to date remains the internationally renown
"KING OF REGGAE MUSIC," the HONORABLE ROBERT NESTA (BOB) MARLEY, O.M.

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO
Mention African song and most people think of South African
practitioners of the vocal arts - Solomon Linda, Miriam Makeba and
perhaps more than anyone else in recent memory, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo. It is Ladysmith Black Mambazo who have come to represent the
traditional culture of South Africa. They are regarded as South
Africa's cultural emissaries at home and around the world. In 1993, at
Nelson Mandela's request, Black Mambazo accompanied the future
President, and then South African President F.W. de Klerk, to the Nobel
Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway. Mambazo sang again at President
Mandela's inauguration in May of 1994. They are a national treasure of
the new South Africa in part because they embody the traditions
suppressed in the old South Africa.

It's been more than fifteen years since Paul Simon made his initial
trip to South Africa and met Joseph Shabalala and the other members of
Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a recording studio in Johannesburg. Having
listened to a cassette of their music sent by a DJ based in Los
Angeles, Simon was captivated by the stirring sound of bass, alto and
tenor harmonies. Simon incorporated the traditional sounds of black
South Africa into the "Graceland" album, a project regarded by many as
seminal to today's explosive interest in World Music. See "Ladysmith"
