Because all of them went solo and there was a huge gap of three years
and they lost the momentum.
Many consider Going For the One to be a great album, but it blows
according to Yes' lofty standards. The main problem, they took the
worst parts of Relayer and made a whole album out of it. The whole
album sounds like Soon the worst a cheesy part of The Gates of
Delerium.
Also Jon Anderson was the main culprit for steeering the band in the
corny "new agey" direction. He got too much into this new age crap
(courtesy Vangelis' bad influence). Also Wakeman detoriated as a
keyboard in the punk era. Howe was also running out of ideas.
After Going For the One they released Tormato which blew too and had
nothing new except shorter songs. They needed both Anderson and
Wakeman to leave to come up with something new in Drama which
nevertheless still sucked. 90125 was quite decent for the 80s but
sounds dated today.
They should have seriously stopped after Relayer and ended on a high
note. Nothing they ever did after has added to their legacy.

I didn't know that Rick Wakeman was a piano. I thought that he was a
man.

As a Lit prof, I'd imagine one would.

To be fair, it was sometimes hard to tell where one ended and the
other began ... :-)
