Maybe the term "surf" is only used in the UK - but I'd be surprised.
They had hits called Surfin' USA & Surfin' Safari, amongst others.
And their other classics would include God Only Knows, Heroes And
Villains, Do It Again, Breakaway - oh, and many more ...
And Pop counts. It's short for "popular".

Ok, but you do need *something* to be great and IMHO the Velvets only
had it in small quantities. They were experimental and most people
would accept that not all experiments work.

Maybe, but I don't think they were particularly good at being
psychadelic which is why they switched to country-rock via a little
dabble in folk-rock. (Remember, my definition of "folk-rock" may not
be quite the same as yours.)

The Carpenters did some classic songs too. Ok, it's smooth pop for
the Bacharach fans but it was quality. That's why people still
remember them while they try to forget others.

Hmmm. This is where your skills at constructing an argument are shown
to be weak. The list is *far* from "endless". Your list of 7 titles
includes everything I would have listed except Light My Fire and
People Are Strange - plus some. It's not even enough for a "Best of"
CD.

Dire Straits were a damned good band. Love Over Gold is a classic
album. So to compare Steely Dan to Dire Straits seems to defeat your
argument, AFAIC.

So great that I can't remember any of those except Walk This Way - and
I'm sure others here could quote you as many memorable Steely Dan
songs, so in what way do they count more than sat Steely Dam (sic)?

Over where? Not the point. On this group (I am writing from rmb) we
talk about rock, pop, folk, jazz, country, whatever - as long as it
has some (vague) relevance to the Beatles.

It's not my job to defend Van Halen. They're not my style. Yoe
damned them with some garbled English above, you support your
statement with some cohesive argument.

You live a sheltered life if David Byrne is the worst you've heard.
Listen to Psycho Killer - that vocal is perfect as someone right on
the edge of sanity.

Others will of course disagree. I happen to think Road To Nowhere,
Psycho Killer, Take Me To The River, Heaven, Burning Down The House
and And She Was are all songs that "matter". There are more ...

Yet some would say they are far more "pop" than "rock". It depends
how you define things. Blondie were a good band and had lots of
hits. They weren't a brilliant album band though.

Well, that says it all.
When are you going to invest some real thought and actually find
something worthwhile to say?
