Hi folks.
Basically, I want something with a satisfying, grinding sound, but without
all the sex, drugs and violence - but also without spilling over into
religiosity.
When I say "religiosity", I mean I'd rather avoid not just christian
music, but all that "devil's bad" and "devil's good" and "devil this" and
"devil that" nonsense. In the same way that restricting oneself to short
hair only, or long hair only - both are giving up a choice (as a guy).
Restricting yourself to long hair only is still to be defined by popular
culture that says guys must have short hair - or rather, to be defined by
its mirror image. In the same way, restricting yourself to that which
christianity lumped together into a "we reject this" category is still to
be defined by christianity.
Anyway as kid, I loved the heaviest stuff I could find. The lyrics were
often annoying, but I didn't let that get in the way of enjoying some
crunchy, piercing guitar. For example, I had a tape with Iron Maiden
"Killers" and Motorhead "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith" that I would flip over
and over on a mostly-daily basis. I wore out the tape, and recorded
another one.

That misquote is from "One of These Days" from their 1971 album Meddle,
which also includes Echoes...

Tool - 'Lateralus', '1000 Days'.
System of a Down - 'Mezmerize', 'Hypnotize' (some might consider them to be
"lyrically challenged")
Devin Townsend - 'Infinity', 'Terria', 'Synchestra'
Pain of Salvation - 'Remedy Lane', 'The Perfect Element' (some might not
consider them to be heavy at all. Probably more "dense" than "heavy")

How the hell can you listen to that kind of music and pay attention to the
lyrics at all? I can't really speak for metal, but when it comes to prog
rock, it's a given that the lyrics are almost universally frightfully bad. If
you can't learn to ignore them, maybe you should listen to some music with
vocals in foreign languages? Or instrumental music?
