Rock bands which were Pop bands too

Very few bands could lay claim to be a rock band as well as a pop
band...

According to wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beach Boys from the
60s
Bee Gees and ABBA from the 70s (can ABBA be considered rock though?)
U2 and Simply Red from the 80s.

It is not clear whether they consider these bands to be a rock band as
well as a pop band...but they do mention these bands

Siouxsie and the Banshees, Talking Heads, The Police and The
Stranglers The Jam,Madness, The Specials, UB40 and Dexys Midnight
Runners.

er actually, by definition almost all the rock bands you have ever heard
are also pop bands.

that's why you've heard of them.

Pop music is a "subgenre" of contemporary popular music, which means
it's not an entire genre. If I could draw a list or hierarchy of
genres, pop music would be on top and the others- bubblegum, dirty,
traditional- at the bottom.

The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys do not
fix this discription very well. Let's start with the Beatles. First of
all, they wrote their own songs (most pop musicians have popular
songwriters write the music); second of all, their three-part melodies
were not simple. They had this nifty little vocal trick where they
would sing the words "send" as "shend" and change the "s" to an
"sh" ("shend your love to me") to remove the top end (treble) because
it would distort on the sound on vinyl. Very difficult indeed. Also,
John's songs are mostly written in a ballad-like format (a strophic
narrative song) whereas most of "pop" uses a simple melody and a loop
over and over again.

A band can be many things at the same time. The Beach Boys were most
certainly a pop group.
