REV: Phoenix, by Asia

Steve Howe: electric, acoustic and steel guitars; harmony vocals on
"Wish I'd Known All Along"
Carl Palmer: drums, percussion
John Wetton: lead vocals, bass
Geoff Downes: keys

I've only listened to Asia's new album a few times, but so far I feel
the original quartet's comeback album lives up to the reunion's
potential. This is a good album: to try to put that in context, I'm
enjoying it more than any of the John Payne-era Asia albums, GPS, Icon
or John Wetton solo albums that have come out in the last 16 years. On
the other hand, I don't think it's as good as _Asia_.

I think this one sneaks up on you. I didn't notice this one at first
either, until I awoke one night with that dramatic chorus...

To know to feel to play me once again

Do you not know
I see you've played the game

Why is it that some songs remind me of and sound a bit like Jefferson
Starship?
Is it just me?
This being said, it is the kind of album that should be fun to listen to on
the road.

"Thirty Years" ago, in an interview for the French magazine "Best", he
stated: "I simplified my bass playing". And that was at his time in
the fist incarnation of two of the prog supergroup UK, Henry. I don't
think he's taken it back ever since.

No, but you *can* hear the bass more on Phoenix than you can any of
the first three Asia albums. His playing is not any more innovative,
but at least you can hear him.
