Reaching deep into the wayback machine here :

I just got the recent CD of unreleased '70's stuff by Bruno Spoerri
(who did Toy Planet with Irmin Schmidt in '81.) He apparently used the
Synthi 100 extensively - and in looking up stuff up about it again, I
see that there were apparently only ever less than 50 made?

So - two Q's, actually - 1. Any good stories about it? 2. How the hell
did you get your mitts on one to begin with? : >

Well, not really interesting about it directly, but what could have been. So
the history of the instrument and the story are all tied into one.

In the early 90's, colleges would contact me when they had instruments to be
repaired or wanted to get rid of. This instrument can from Rutgers. They had
the 100, 2 Putneys, an AKS, a rare 8 band eq...

What on earth were you doing with a Polyfusion system?

Did you have anything to do with the band Toto?

(Ali G voice) - Yo, for real. That pic of Porcaro in the Vintage Synth
book is insane.

I assume this is not a question I have to answer, is it? You do know who I
am, but if not, feel free to find your way to:

http://www.analogics.org/

Do you want me to autograph your copy of Vintage Synths (you'd be surprised
how often I actually get asked this)?

I looked but I still don't know who you are. I did recognize the Moog
Sonic VI on the bottom right of the photo though.

I am Analogics. If you have ever read Mark Vail's Vintage Synth book, in the
interview section you can be subjected to some of my witty banter. Most of
the pricing in Mark's book came from me.

I still talk to him a couple times a year. He is a great guy and very
knowledged in the subject.

I always assumed you knew, since you occasionally wander over to
rec.music.makers.synth.

I've never owned the book, just skimmed it at the bookstore. I don't
spend TOO much time over at rec.music.makers.synth because they're
mostly a bunch of idiots.

I am not sure you are keeping any better company here. ;-)

Having bought my first synth in 73, your story reminds me of how polarized
points of view were back then. Emerson vs. Wakeman, Moog vs. Arp, etc...
Mine was a Minimoog. Funny in that it was used (they hadn't been out that
long, maybe a year and a half), and had a broken D key. Bought it for $600
and it ended up being the first repair in a long line of repairs.

I remember the transition the Odyssey made during its lifespan. My opinion
is that Arp should have made the upgrade free to at least the people who
recently purchased an Ody. Fledgling companies like Moog and Arp were run by
people that were high on engineering skills and not so high on business and
manufacturing skills. At least Arp made the decision to move to PC board
mounted pots and switches, something that Moog took a number of more years
to realize. The amount of hand wiring in an instrument like a Minimoog is
frightening.

LEM? Not familiar with them.

Do you remember an early synth magazine called Synapse? They were
involved with that, along with my friend Cynthia who now makes modular
synths, website here: http://www.cyndustries.com/
