You will find some people in here who like it, but they are few and far
between.

Personally, I do.

Porcupine Tree (almost metal), Symphony X, and Dream Theater are all on
my concert list for this summer.

yikes!

let the flames commence...

When I just want to veg out and not think about the music to which I'm
listening, I listen to death and thrash metal. If I listen to prog
rock/metal, jazz, classical or new age, I'm too busy anyling it to relax.

I like Dream Theater a lot....they have a lot of prog
leanings....melodic.

Don't care for today's brand of metal....

Metal to me was stuff like Iron Maiden....or maybe Motorhead.

I'm sure there are people who like heavy metal but I do not (there are
always exceptions).

The thing that turns me off are the guitar solos. Normally, I like guitar
solos so what is it about metal guitar solos that turn me off? Is it the
tone of the guitar sound? Is it the shredding? Why do I like Holdsworth
and similar shredding but not the current crop of shredders (especially
metal shredders)?

I am not a huge fan although i am rather fond of this group.

Check out Cynic:

Listen to the wicked guitar solo at 2:51 of the clip. He is playing
over some very complex changes. This group has a prog connection as
well. The bass player has a group and Bruford and Steve Hackett are
guests. Check out Gordian Knot:

At 1:30 or so you will hear Bruford and Hackett. Hackett is on the
first track as well. Very Crimson like in their approach at times.

I like a range of it. On the proggier end, I like a lot of atmospheric
sludge bands. Stuff like Pelican, Isis, and Mouth of the Architect. It
straddles the line between metal and Godspeed/Mogwai-type post-rock.
