Talk of Atoll's overrated Tertio album on PE prompted a bit of
discussion concerning the French prog scene of the late 70's. Here were
my thoughts:
The compositions on Atoll's Tertio LP are serviceable, but I don't
understand why it's often cited as their best album. Axing the
violinist was a disappointment, because he added layers to their sound
which I don't find here. I'm also under whelmed by the shorter length
of this disc. I much prefer their preceding L'Araignee Mal. Of course,
the shoddy sound of the CD that I owned of Tertio may be impacting my
judgment to a degree, but I've gotten a lot more mileage from these
below titles, in addition to both of the prior Atoll discs (yes, I
found the rockier Musiciens Magiciens superior as well.)
As for 1977's French prog sweepstakes, I consider Tertio to have been
surpassed by each of the following:
Archaia - Archaia (cryptic sounds from tweaked out electronics and
sinewy "is that a guitar?" fuzz strains, this sounds like nothing
else.)

Great dark, proto-avant wave meet prog, meet zeuhl. Excellent album...
> Artcane - Odyssee (In terms of mid-period Crimson clones from France,

In my opinion one of the most underated french progressive albums ever. A
minor masterpiece!
> Etron Fou LeLoublan - Batelanges (more jam-like than their 80's output,

> ZNR - Traite de Mecanique Populaire (a step down from the moog-woven

Both are amongst the best albums that ever came out of France.

what is it about this band? what am I missing? I think they are horrible?

What do you think about Francoise Hardy as an innovative songwriter.
She said she wanted to work with those in the avant-garde (I think
she was referring in a general way to songwriting).
"Those who enjoy their own emotionally bad health and who habitually
fill their own minds with the rank poisons of suspicion, jealousy and
hatred, as a rule take umbrage at those who refuse to do likewise, and
they find a perverted relief in trying to denigrate them."

Sorry, the author didn't quoted.
Not sure how the Hardy question will float here, but I was excited
by finding another female doing work somewhere along the level of
Joni Mitchell, at an earlier time and in France.
France Gall does outdo her as far as vocal abilities. Listening to
both are
a GREAT way to learn French.

For an alternative to Joni, I almost always ended up with Laura Nyro.

Both are good but i am a huge Joni fan. Really enjoy the Hejira
album. Don Juan is very nice too. Of course who can not love the Court
and spark album. An instant classic. John Guerin's playing is
outstanding as well.
