With all of the recent discussion about Emerson's good, bad and
indifferent talent, I figured I'd toss this album out on the coals for
a raking or 2. (at least!)
Many of us here have a solid distaste for "Love Beach" and who could
blame us. It was a poor representation, overall for the bombastic
trio. "Memoirs" barely made it audible.
The Works sessions must have gone to their heads back then...
However, ELPowell seemed to revive that old formula many of us liked
of days yore as well as tossing in some music "of the times", which
for a band like them, is not an easy thing to do.
The tour for the album was the first time I really saw them play. Had
tix for the classic BSS '73 show, but it was shit canned for some
reason - SPAC at Saratoga. 'Twas told it was an equipment snafu, but
one can only guess until told the real deal. That all said, they did
deliver a solid performance, as far as I remember it.

I'm not so sure. To me, it relates much more compositionally to the
*Works* era, but is actually better--almost like the album we should've
gotten when what we got was *Works 2* or *Love Beach*. What's more "of
the times" is the production.

I suspect so.

"A bit more commercial" is OK at times. It's just plain rolling over
that's the problem.

"Thirty Years" have gone...
"Touch" is a song

The usual opener at Canada's only ELP tribute band's shows.
and is in line with some Pink Floyd of the era, albeit

Good to read this after the "3 (EBP) - 20 Years Ago" I linked on

At which point the car was totally out of gas.

That is a clear departure, to be sure.
