ASIA - Featuring members of veteran Seventies rock acts Yes (Steve
Howe & Geoff Downes), King Crimson (John Wetton) and Emerson Lake &
Palmer (Carl Palmer), Asia were the first Prog Rock 'supergroup' of
the 1980s and for a brief period reigned supreme. Their 1982 self-
titled debut album 'Asia' got them to the top of the charts in the US
thanks to massive MTV exposure of the singles, 'Heat Of The Moment',
'Only Time Will Tell' and 'Sole Survivor'. Likewise 1983's 'Alpha',
their second album, also faired well producing a couple of hits in
'Don't Cry' and 'The Smile Has Left Your Eyes'. However following an
'internal' line-up re-shuffle 1985's 'Astra' failed to hit the same
commercial mark and the group disbanded only to reunite in 1990 for a
European tour including two sold-out dates in front of 20,000 fans in
Moscow. With the departure of John Wetton a new Asia (with singer John
Payne) was born and toured sporadically during the 1990s in support of
some competent releases all beginning with the letter 'A' ('Aqua',
'Aria', 'Arena' and 'Aura' to name but a few) plus numerous live and
compilation affairs. As of 2008 the return of the 1980's line-up has
rekindled the 'original' flame with the release of a new album
'Phoenix' and a worldwide tour.
