7. This week's top 50:
The top 4 singles from last week don't move this week. So we have
Madonna spending a third week at number one with "4 Minutes".
However, there are rumblings at the top. On the CD singles chart,
Madonna tumbles to number 3 this week, outsold by Gabriella Cilmi
who is in turn outsold by Psycho Teddy. Psycho Teddy's hit is
the biggest selling CD single across the nation, but without the
support of digital sales, it can only get to number 5 on the
overall singles chart this week.
There are 3 new entries into the actual top 10. Thanks to topping
the CD singles chart, we have Psycho Teddy bullet from number 12 to
5, while this week's highest top 50 new entry comes in at number 7.
And the final new entry into the top 10 belongs to Vanessa
Amorosi as "Perfect" climbs one spot from 11 to 10. Despite
come back after come back for most of this decade, she's finally
done it, scoring her first top 10 hit since "The Power" hit
number 8 in January 2001. Vanessa's biggest hit was the number 4
platinum-selling smash "Shine" which spent an incredible
26 weeks in the top 50 during 2000 - an impressive record in
those days of much shorter chart runs. "Shine" was a hit
throughout Europe as well, with a new video for the song being
specially filmed for the overseas market.
The GetUp Mob look as if they are vying for a place in chart
history as one of the shortest running top 5 hits. After
debuting at number 4 two weeks ago with "From Little Things Big
Things Grow", it dived to number 18 last week and tumbles
an incredible 28 spots to number 46 this week. Should it
exit the top 50 next week, it will be the shortest running
top 5 hit since Francesca's "Way Of The World" spent just one
week at number 3 before dropping out of the top 50 in 2002.
But should it hang on for a 4th week in the top 50, it will
join U2's "Electrical Storm" (2002) and Britney's "Everytime"
(2004) as a top 5 hit that only lasted 4 weeks in the top 50.
So what happened to last week's 5 new hits? Not a lot. Kylie's
"In My Arms" was the biggest of the week's bunch of low charting
new hits when it debuted at number 35. This week, it's down to
number 43 as Kylie now notches up her second hit in a row that was
not able to make the top 10. In the UK it's a vastly different
story with "In My Arms" storming into the top 10 this week, while
her last single, "Wow", was a UK top 5 smash recently. Britney's
"Break The Ice" looks like being an embarassingly small hit for
her given the top 3 success of her last two singles. "Break The
Ice" climbs just 3 places from its number 41 debut last week
with little help from its release into record stores which
sees the CD single debut at a very low number 48 on that chart.
And last week's new entries by Wyclef Jean, Pete Murray and
Duffy all drop out of the top 50 this week.
Five new entries into this week's top 50, but only one manages
to make it higher than number 30 first week in.
7. AMERICAN BOY - Estelle featuring Kanye West
CD singles chart: (released Saturday 17th May)
Digital track chart: #6
Back in September 2004, British singer, rapper and producer
Fanta Estelle Swaray, who goes by the recording name of
Estelle, released her debut single "1980". The song was
named after her birth year and featured Estelle's thick
English accent as she sang about her life growing up in
London on this autobiographical single. It peaked at
number 36 here in Australia and was a moderate British hit,
reaching number 14 on their charts. The follow-up single,
"Free", only made it to number 49 while her album "The 18th
Day" failed to make an impact in Australia. Her minor
success in the UK and little impact throughout the rest of the
world resulted in her record company dropping her. However,
she managed to secure a new deal with Atlantic Records
recently, recording the album "Shine" which features
collaborations and production with a smorgasbord of musicians
including Will.I.Am, Wyclef Jean, Mark Ronson, Cee-Lo
and Kanye West. The first single from this bumper album
was the track "Wait A Minute" which featured guest vocals
by Will.I.Am. When released in the UK, the song did so
poorly, it didn't even make the top 100. It almost looked
like she was finished musically, however the release
of the album's second single "American Boy", turned her
fortunes around dramatically. Featuring guest vocals by
rapping superstar Kanye West, her smooth vocals go hand in
hand with Kanye's, and the single was embraced by the
British, sending it all the way to number one over there
back in March. Now Estelle clearly has her eyes on charts
all over the world with the international release of
"American Boy". It has already reached number 2 in
Ireland, number 5 in New Zealand and this week it debuts
at number 7 here in Australia. This single was charting
on the digital track chart since last month, but for some
reason her record company wanted to delay the song's appearance
on the official singles chart, possibly to make an impressive
debut as momentum built, and they have achieved that. And
there is more to come, with the CD single not hitting shops
until the second half of the month, which will no doubt help
propell this single even higher in the next few weeks.
For Kanye, he scores his fourth top 10 hit in Australia thanks
to Estelle. His previous top 10 smashes were "Gold Digger"
(number 1, October 2005), "Touch The Sky" (number 10, April
2006) and "Stronger" (number 2, September 2007).

30. TAKE A BOW - Rihanna
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #23
20 year-old singer Rihanna has enjoyed good success with her
current album "Good Girl Gone Bad". The actual album has been
a double-platinum seller and it spawned a flood of huge hit
singles including the two number ones "Umbrella" and "Don't
Stop The Music" plus the top 5 smash "Shut Up And Drive".
The album will be re-released shortly as a deluxe version with
the title "Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded". As well as the
original album's 12 songs, there will be 4 brand new tracks
added onto the CD plus a DVD of footage from her Manchester
concert and other bonus material. The first of the album's
new songs is "Take A Bow" which debuts at number 30 this week
on digital sales alone. In New Zealand, "Take A Bow" is
a massive hit, climbing to number 2 over there this week.

39. WHEN WE WERE KIDS - The Galvatrons
CD singles chart: #16
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
Four piece Melbourne rock group, The Galvatrons, formed
last year and gained exposure with their performances at
Big Day Out festival last summer. Their debut release is a
5-track EP which showcases their 1980s inspired electro-rock
sound. The EP is titled "When We Were Kids" and it enters
the chart at number 39 this week.

48. SHAWTY GET LOOSE - Lil Mama featuring Chris Brown and T-Pain
CD singles chart: #28
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
18 year-old American rapper Lil Mama, whose real name is
Niatia Kirkland, first gained exposure in Australia thanks to
Avril Lavigne's chart-topping smash single, "Girlfriend",
last year. A remix of "Girlfriend" was recorded which
featured vocals by both Lil Mama and Avril, and a brand new
music video was shot. This remix appeared as a bonus track
on Avril's next single, the top 5 smash "When You're Gone",
and Lil Mama has also featured on remixes of other huge
international hits including Rihanna's "Umbrella", Britney
Spears' "Gimme More" and Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls".
Lil Mama's debut album, "Voice of the Young People", was
released last month and features her first solo single,
"Lip Gloss" which went top 10 on the US Billboard charts.
The album's second single is the track "Shawty Get Loose"
which features Chris Brown singing the chorus and T-Pain
rapping in one of the verses. It debuts at number 48
here in Australia and it recently went top 10 in the US
and to number 3 in New Zealand. The music video imitates
parts of the videos of TLC's "No Scrubs" and the Michael and
Janet Jackson duet "Scream".

50. YAHHH! - Soulja Boy Tell 'Em featuring Arab
CD singles chart: (released Saturday 10th May)
Digital track chart: #38
16 year-old American rapper Soulja Boy enjoyed an international
smash hit with "Crank That" which topped the US charts and
went top 3 in Australia, New Zealand the UK. Australia
seems to have missed out on the second single from his
"
Souljaboytellem.com" titled "Soulja Girl", but we now get
his third single, "Yahhh!", which debuts at number 50 this
week.
