I think you should definitely be looking at weighted action keyboards
-- i.e. 'digital pianos' -- not plain touch-sensitive ones that would
feel quite different from the teacher's grand. And I guess Yamahas
are the standard...

However, if you'd rather keep the price somewhat below the $1500+
others have quoted (:-)), you might want to consider a Privia. (As I've
mentioned in some other posts recently!) I've had my PX-310 for a couple
of years and I'm very satisfied. I paid $600 for it at Guitar Center.
This model has the features I happen to want, but I've seen the lower
end models (same keyboard and sound engine) at GC for as low as $400.

One point that might be important is that it *is* fairly light (26 lbs).
Full 88 keys, with graded weighted hammer action, and it sounds like a
piano!.
