Recommendations for a cheap, simple keyboard?

Hi,

I'd be grateful if someone could give me some advice on which
electronic keyboard to buy my young daughter. She's 6 years old, and
just starting private piano lessons (at her request). The lady that
she's taught by has an acoustic baby grand piano in her house, which
my daughter gets to play.
Although my daughter has asked for piano lessons and seems very keen,
I'm reluctant to go out and spend a lot of money on something that may
just be a flash-in-the-pan, but I would like to purchase something for
her to practise on.

So what I'd like is:

An electronic keyboard that is not too big, so that it is portable,
but big enough to be practical for playing some of the pieces that she
will be taught.

But cheap enough that it won't cost the bank, especially if she
decides to give up.

And with not too many fancy buttons/modes/programs/electronics etc to
distract her or confuse her. In other words, the simplest electronic
keyboard that will still do a good job.

First of all I think as a practice piano, you are right to get
a digital. The technology has improved to the point where
it is going to kill off the small acoustic market. No substitute
for a good grand piano however.

I own a yamaha p-250. I can't praise this piano enough.
It has the sound and feel of a good grand piano. It is pricey
and a bit heavy however. Also, it is no longer in production,
being replaced by the cp300 which is the same piano with
a few more bells and whistles. Cost around 2k.

Since this piano is a bit heavy, I have been looking around
for a more portable keyboard for practice. I have been
looking at the M-audio prokeys 88 sx. I have seen this piano
new on E-bay for as little as $300.00. You will need an audio
system to hook it into however. ( amp or stereo system)

It weighs only 17 lbs. !! another reason I want it.
It is on my list to get when I get the funds.

Here is a video:

Jim,

Thanks very much for the response.
The instruments that you've mentioned will be a good starting point
for me.

Cheers,
F.

I agree - also a good choice

Yamaha makes the best when it comes to overall touch and
sound.

Umm, I seem to have been overposting a bit recently (:-/), but...

I just saw this review of the newer PX-800. It's a bit pricier,
but it sounds as if they may have fixed things like the 'key-thunk'.

At her age, I recommend a 61 key digital piano. It has all the keys
she needs at this age. Be sure it comes with a keyboard stand, music
stand and AC adapter, and some even come with a little bench. The're
only about $100, more if you want velocity sensitive keys. Carried by
everyone from K Mart to Costco to Circuit City. If you want the full
88 keys, there are some in the $400-$600 range that are perfectly
adequate for her age and level. Costco seems to always have them.
Enjoy the searching and shopping. You'll be able to answer your own
question soon enough. Let us know what you find and eventually buy.
