Just got back from my first drum circle and had to tell someone about it so here goes.
First a little background. I'm a guitar player who bought a djembe to get my 10 year old son involved in music. I've tried to teach him guitar, ukulele, piano, etc. but he's just not interested. He said he wanted to play the drums but before I spent the money on a drum kit I wanted to see how interested he really was so I got the djembe. I've bought two djembe how to videos but not being a drummer myself I really couldn't teach him much. I found this drum circle workshop not too far from home and we both went to check it out.
I really didn't know what to expect going in. I thought that maybe 5-10 people max. would show up. We had over 30!!! The instructor and organizers were floored by the turnout. All age groups were represented. There were two other kids my sons age but I was really suprised to see so many women senior citizens show up! The ones I spoke to signed up just to try something new. What a great attitude! I hope I have the same attitude when I'm there age. Only about 10 of the 30 brought their own drum with them. The rest were supplied by the instructor.
As for the workshop, my son and I loved it! We went through a variety of simple beats together then 3 groups playing 3 complimentary rhythms simultaneously. You would think 30 people beating on drums would be pure noise but we were all making music! If someone couldn't play one of the more complicated beats they played straight quarter notes or something that seemed to fit. Very supportive group of people. No professional drummers or show offs in this crowd. We have 4 more workshops to go and I can't wait for the next one!
Anyone who hasn't been to a drum circle get on the internet and search for one in your area. If your in the northern NJ area come by this one

You won't regret it!
