OK, what about the VP? How common it is for a close "also ran" to get the VP
nomination? I can see potential advantages and problems.

I had a two-part bet that I rolled into one: $100 for Obama to win the
nomination, $300 for him to win the presidency. It's like taking
candy from a baby!!
As far as also-rans becoming VP, it has rarely happened. I just
looked at some information.... With the presidents I'm familiar with,
going back to FDR (no, not PERSONALLY familiar!!), I don't recall
any. Perhaps someone with a bit deeper will have some information...
Here's something interesting....
When Vice President John Adams ran to succeed George Washington as
president in 1796, he won a close election in the electoral college.
His running mate on the Federalist Party ticket, Thomas Pinckney...
