Her maiden Hindi film was Khazanchi in 1941 under
Ghulam Haider, in which she sang Saawan ke nazarein hain. Her first
film in Mumbai was the 1943 Taqdeer for which she was invited to sing
for Nargis by Mehboob Khan, and she also sang in Aag for Raj Kapoor.
Born April 14, 1919 in Amritsar, Shamshad Begum began her career with
Peshawar Radio. Some of her famous songs Saiyyan dil mein aana re
(Bahar), Kabhi aar kabhi paar(Aar Paar), Kajraa mohabbat wala (Kismet)
have been used even by remix makers and have been successful.
Shamshad has also sung Islamic devotionals like naat, ghazals and
Punjabi folk. Loved and respected equally in India and Pakistan, she
has always remained away from publicity and has thus not won any
significant awards.

The book includes inputs by the late Naushad and O.P.Nayyar as well as
Ravi and Sulochana Kadam among others. Priced at Rs 850, it chronicles
her life and songs and is also studded with photographs. The musical
section contains statistics and break-up data about her songs in
different languages and genres as well as with different music
directors, singers and for different actors.
Writer Chandrakant Mohanlal, 76, spent seven years on the research,
including a month-and-a-half in Lahore, where the singer began her
film career.
