Off topic - Mehboob Ki Mehndi and other places of hyderabad

We were just watching the movie "mehboob ki mehendi" and I told my
landlord that a place by this name exists in Hyderabad. On googling I
found this article....

Places like Toli Chowki, Lakdi ka pul, Gachibowli, Fateh Darwaza,
Chandulal Baradari, Chaderghat, are not covered but the article is
insightful.

The story of the name

Names of places are suggestions of human activity, their progressive
discovery and settlement of people. Read on for the colourful stories
behind the names.

ALBERT ABID — the Jew, is not known to most of us. He was the royal
dhobi in-charge of the wardrobe of the sixth Nizam, Nawab Mir Mehboob
Ali Khan. The dhobi gave an important identity to Hyderabad — the busy
commercial hub `Abids', which came to be known after him. He also
lived in that area.

  A Lifetime of Musical Pleasures.

My musical education was from AIR Delhi Radio from 1944- 1952.
The singers were Surayia and Noorjehan as earl influence.
Perhaps I was impressed by the female voice.. I had missed out on
the New Theatres era prior to 1944. I had to catch up on the musical
era !
Listening to Ustads at this early stage; I could not listen to Bade
Ghulam Ali Khan for 1/2 hour and other classical singers at this early
stage as I had better things to do. Later on I caught up, and found
the great singers of earlier era such as Kamla Jharia.

I have no pretentions to be knowledgeable about classical vocal music.
I can now appreciate Bade Ghulam Ali Kahan and his " Yaad Pia kee
aaye " and " Chaad re mora ang ang" with great pleasure.

Also Ustad Barkat Ali Khan's " vWoh jo ham mein tum mein mein qarar
tha - tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho" as my favourits.

I am impressed by the knowledge of the likes of Sanjeev Rambhadran,
Urzung Khan, Town Crier DG, Afzal A Khan and Archisman Mazumder.

I will go as far as to say that I consider Ustad Barkat Ali Khan's
above song as great singing although he was eclipsed by Bade Ghulam
Ali Khan, as ultimate art of singing. among male singers. Ahmad

RMIMers on WorldSpace Farishta - Sunday 9am

Author: Chetan Vinchhi
Date: Aug 9, 2008 05:42

Hi,

A few RMIMers and RMIM types participated in a roundtable about golden
era music and its perception across generation boundaries. It was a
pretty free-form discussion. And we are relying on the DJ Deepak to
edit and pepper the talk portions with appropriate songs :)

Anyway WorldSpace subscribers, do tune into Farishta channel 9am-11am
on 2 Sundays (10th and 17th Aug). Hope some of you share your thoughts
on the program.
