Hello Friends,

Last Christmas, we lost a dear dear friend - a pillar of this RMIM
community, Satish Kalra.

He was one of the few early members of this usenet group to have had
the knack for, or the good fortitude, to be able to transcend, to a
substantial degree, the study and pleasure of listening to and
watching hindi film music and related genres from the hallowed pre-70
(or, by some accounts, pre-59) period to the post-90s and post 2006's
stuff. And he did seem to relish his 'jhoom baraabar jhomm' (the
Shankar-Ehsan-Loy piece) as much as the "ye chandaa roos kaa", the
"rahe.n na rahe.n ham", the "baaje paayal chham-chham", the "bin dekhe
aur bin pehchaane" AND "dheere dheere aa re" - all good songs to him.

This year we say goodbye to the physical presence of this man, as we
commemorate his life in RMIM.

October 3/4/5 have been scheduled for Denver to do this. Please come -
call me if you have never been to one of these so I can give you some
sense of the ecstacy and blissful parts of these meets... but, do
think seriously about coming to this one... just for him.

NDTV's Sreenivasan Jain got talking to Lata Mangeshkar about life,
music and the studio Bombay Talkies. Here's are some snippets from the
interview.

NDTV: Namaskar. Thank you so much for doing this. The wonderful thing
is that when we were talking a little while back. You told me that
Bombay Talkies has a special meaning for you.

Lata Mangeshkar: Definitely.That is because my playback singing career
started with Bombay Talkies. There used to be a studio called Bombay
Talkies, who's owners were Ashok Kumar and Watcha. Before that, it was
originally owned by Devika Rani. After she left, Ashok Kumar started
running it.

NDTV: So you got your first break in the Bombay Talkies studio?

Lata Mangeshkar: Yes, definitely.

NDTV: How did that happen?

Lata Mangeshkar: What happened was that I started out as an actress
but I never used to like acting. I used to work with master Vinayak.

  Musical taste "defines personality"

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Fans of classical music and jazz are
creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes,
heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with
themselves. So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt
University who has been studying the links between people's
personalities and their choice of music.

"People often define their sense of identity through their musical
taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using
certain types of slang," North said.

"It's not surprising that personality should also be related to
musical preference."

In what North said was the largest study ever conducted into
individuals' musical preference and character, researchers asked
36,518 people from around the world to rate how much they liked 104
different musical styles before taking a personality test.

"Researchers have been showing for decades that fans of rock and rap
are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated,"
North said.

  Lata and Asha: classically distinct(?)!

The other day, I was listening to Lata ji’s ‘Ja main tose naahin
bolun’ and marveling at her amazing skill and proficiency in executing
the gamak taans, in particular those at the end of the song. In fact,
for her, such songs are not unknown territory. ‘Sanwre sanwre,’ ‘kuhu
kuhu bloe,’ ‘man mohana bade jhoothe’ and many others stand testimony
to her transcendence as a (filmy) classical singer. She’s pitch-
perfect and has a godly voice, which suits pretty much every actress.

The next song that played on my comp was Asha ji’s ‘Sooni sooni saans
ki sitaar.’ Comparison was inevitable.

I, personally, haven’t heard a better ‘classical’ song from Asha ji.
In fact, within the limited knowledge of her music that I have, I
can’t recollect many songs with such elaborate taanbaazi. All that
aside, she’s mesmerizingly beautiful in this one. Her voice may lack
the honey-sweet eminence that Lata’s enjoyed, but the vazan and
superior kharaj in her voice gives her a distinct advantage (in a
sense) at such songs.
I made the following observations:

1. Lata ji most definitely was more pleasing to the ear in such songs,
owing to the soft-supple-fragile texture of her voice.

2. Asha ji sounded way more ‘classical’ than Lata ji. In fact, her
singing almost bordered on the professional classical style (IMO).
It’s purely a matter of choice that I prefer the latter and her style...

  Film Songs by Classical Vocalists

I was wondering what would be the contribution of the film's composer,
when the masters render raag based songs? Other than tell them the
raag, the khayaal and the duration, what else can they be told? IMO,
nothing more, as they would certainly know what to do.

Some examples
1) torii jai jai kartaar - Ustad Amir Khan - Baiju Bawra
2) prem jogan banke - Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - Mughal-e-Azam
3) shubh din aaye - - Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - Mughal-e-Azam
4) jhanak jhanak paayal baaje - Ustad Amir Khan - Jhanak Jhanak Payal

here are correction for Collection #139

Track 471: Adil-e-Jahangir (1955), Music: Husanlal Bhagatram, Singer:
Lata
Somg: Ae meri zindagi tujhe dhoondhoo kahan

Track 472:Aawaaz (1956), Music: Salil Chaudhary, Lata & chorus
Song: Baaba teri sona chunariya
Note that the song in the movie is incomplete and ends in some door
slamming and misc noise. This is a complete version of the song.

Tracks 477 and 480 are NOT from the movie Kinare Kinare. They are both
from Ek Gaaon Ki Kahani (1957), music by Salil Chaudhary
