On "Sangeet Sarita" (on Vividh Bharati) this morning, the thumri
singer Dr Anita Sen was playing film songs that she said were "thumri"-
based. The first one was the 'Mughal-e-Azam' song, "mohe panaghaT
pe...". Then she when on to say (in summary), "It is rare to find many
songs in one film based on the same raga, and rarer still for all of
them to have become hits." (My first reaction was "here comes
'Phagun', but I was pleasantly surprised.) She played a medley of four
songs from 'Pakeezah' - "thaa.De rahiyo...", "chalate chalate...",
"inhii.n logo.n ne...", and "chalo diladaar chalo...".
Questions for the ICM experts:
- Are all the four songs based on one raga? I am hard put to find
similarities among them!
- Which raga is this?
- She also introduced the songs as "four thumri-s" from 'Pakeezah'. By
what stretch could one describe "chalate chalate" and "chalo diladaar
chalo" as 'thumri-s'?!

Dekh Liya Taqdeer Se Qudrat Ka Sab Se Bada Karishma
=========================================
No sir, it is not any Great Water Fall, or the Geyser at Yellowstone
Park,
but I was lucky to watch a film song, were the girl was in deep coma,
but manage to lip-synch the song.
Not only did she sang this beautiful song with deep emotions, but
could
also pause for interlude music.
I don't think any other director has ever achieved such a miracle.
Compared
to this Shammi Kapoor's 'Aasman Ka Farishta' was a child's play.
I will post the the film and it's director's names tomorrow, but
meanwhile
ask members to refresh their Filmy memory and add to this list of
''Quadrat Ke Karishme' - i.e. weird song picturizations

Today I saw an obituary in Delhi edition of Times of India for Mohd.
Rafi published by a 'Mohd. Rafi Memorial Society'. It might be more
common but I happen to see such a tribute to a legend these days for
the first time.
It says -
"To live in the hearts of entire world is never to die. khudaa kare ke
qayaamat ho aur tuu aa_e"
Well said.

Doesn't sound novel in this age but it must have been a trendy idea 4
decades back....

When Shakti Samanta was shooting the song Mere Sapno Ki Rani for
Aradhana , he couldn't get combined dates from Rajesh Khanna and
Sharmila Tagore. Sharmila Tagore couldn't make it to Darjeeling and so
only Rajesh Khanna's portions were shot, showing him driving the jeep
across the hills. Sharmila Tagore's footage was separately shot in
Mumbai where a train set was erected in a studio. The two footages
were later edited together to appear as if in the same frame.
The song went on to become a huge hit.
