  Musical Inspirations

Hi all,

According to a report in TOI, Naushad Ali's love for Powai lake in Mumbai
has been immortalised by naming a new field station by the lake after him.
Reminiscing about Naushad's love for Powai, his son, a composer himself said
that Naushad would often come to Powai lake for inspiration alongwith
Majrooh, Shakeel Badayuni. Gurudutt and Johnny Walker and Raj Kapoor would
join him for fishing.
In 1939, Naushad visited the lake when composing music for Mirza Saheban.
Some musicians were perched atop trees and some sat by the edge of the lake.

That sounds interesting because I have heard of some artists being inspired
by nature, rainfall, breeze, mountains. These days new MDs are "inspired"
(euphemism to hide their copycat skills) by music of other composers.

Does anyone here know of other such incidents where lyricists and MDs were
inspired by travel, playing, innocence of children....other such things?

Regards,
Arty.

MD: Shanti Kumar Desai - A research ON

BCSP has undertaken an extensive research on the above named MD:
Shanti Kumar Desai to study his composing skills, and the genre.

Ask me why ?

Ever since thew publication of Feroze Rangoonwalla's FILMOGRAPHY in
the 70's, I have been amazed at the prolific sc ores of music this SKD
has given from the early 30's upto about 1956 or so. As pointed out
by late G.M.Durrani during my numerous meetings at the latter's abode
in Worli , on iniation he used to tell me that SKD was a wonderful
Gujerati and possessed rare acumen in music composing. This is amply
evident in the abundance of films he has scored music ...true that
many of those film-songs NEVER got recorded by HMV and whatever film
songs HMV / TWIN (Blue) / YOUNG INDIA had issued have remained 'much
in the dark' even today.

I have always LOVED the music of SKD with whatever little BCSP has
managed to salvage over the years. In fact, once I had played the
superb solo of GMD:

Falak ke chand ka jawab hum ney dekh liya.
Zameen ki godmein bhi, maahtab dekh liya....

Remembering poet Makhdoom

By Akhilesh Mithal

February 3 was blessed by the birth of the poet "Makhdoom" in 1908.
His given name was Abu Saiyyad Makhdoom Muhiuddeen Qadiri. The Qadiris
are a Sufi silsilaa of importance. Their followers and devotees
include the 17th century princess Jahanara Begum (daughter of the
Emperor Shah Jahan 1627-1658) and her brother Dara Shukoh. Dara
translated the Upanishads into Persian. This was the text taken to
Europe and translated into Latin to help make the West aware of what
has come to be known as Hindu philosophy although the word Hindu did
not exist when the Upanishads came into being. We shall talk about the
word Hindu in another column and shall concentrate on the poet.
