  Hero of Ras Vilas (1932)

Author: dn.usenet
Date: Feb 18, 2008 23:16

Ras Vilas (1932) was probably Gohar Karnataki's first
film. Who played Krishna in it? HFGK says it was Anant
Damle. One source claims it was Krishnarao Chonkar, whose
name is not mentioned in HFGK credits at all. 'Master'
Chonkar played opposite her in Sohni Mahiwal (1933,
Sharada Movietone) and Kaalaa Waagh (1934, Jayadevi
Cinetone). Later Gohar worked for Bhavanani Films
before her successful (and fateful) audition for Gandharva
Natak Mandali in late1937.

While Geet Kosh spells her name as 'Gauhar', Marathi
sources tend to have it as 'Gohar'. Which one is
(more) correct or are both forms very 'valid'?

  Khamoshi.........

Author: kalihawa

When I saw Khamoshi as a teenager, it sank into my skin and wouldn't
leave me for several days. The trauma of a gagged Radha seemed my own
and that haunting song would 'rah rah ke' buzz in my head. The
gullibility of that age allowed me to go through that ethereal
experience which is not possible now. I was watching the movie again
yesterday but instead of experiencing that delicately nuanced
portrayal of Cinema, what struck me was the utterly impractical and
farfetched medical remedy employed. A few things that surprised me
though, was our rationality filter that let go some gems in songs.
Songs often pass through our hearing and endear us on the basis of the
magic of power words such as talash, tanhai, silsila, tammanna and
graphic appeal of pighalna, phisalna, bikharnaa etc. Often the deeper...

Da's the way I like it , Kunal M Shah

Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor is ready to make a biopic on legendary
actor, singer, lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenwriter
and scriptwriter Kishore Kumar. The artiste's professional as well as
personal life was the stuff that soap operas are made of. The script
of the film titled Kishoreda, is ready and will be produced by Percept
Picture Company.

Our source informs, "Nagesh Kukunoor is an ardent fan of Kishore
Kumar. He has seen all his films and loves his songs. This film is
Nagesh's way of paying a tribute to Kishoreda. Nagesh believes that
there will be no dearth of interesting incidents in the film as
Kishoreda was known for his quirks as much as he was for his talent.
Nagesh has already completed writing the script and will soon start
casting for the film too."

Film songs on : Dhobi - the clothes washerman

Author: Jay
Date: Feb 18, 2008 00:19

For ages, on of the most simple & humble occupation is the work of the
'dhobi' - the clothes washerman. This service has been very effectively
potrayed in quite a no.of Indian feature cinema ever since the talkie
started in 1931. Often, this characterisation highlighted the film
when songs were picturised on it.

How many such film songs can any one identify on/about the dhobi ?
Can you enumerate then....Indian as well as Pakistani films !

"A song audible only to dogs "

Author: dn.usenet
Date: Feb 18, 2008 00:11

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080218/wl_nm/newzealand_dogsong_dc

"A song audible only to dogs has topped New Zealand record charts...

"A Very Silent Night, recorded at a frequency only dogs can hear, was so
popular among owners it hit number one at Christmas, but has been receiving
mixed responses from listeners.

"The most violent one was a dog that physically attacked the radio when it
was played and went quite berserk and totally destroyed it," said Bob
Kerridge, chief executive of animal welfare group, the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). "On the other side of the scale,
they just lie down and did nothing."

"Never having heard it myself, I don't what they'll hear and of course I
don't know how dogs hear music," he said. "

(Editor's Note : How I wish all the Punchum-style songs, which
Indian dogs listen to, were inaudible to me.)

That a song audible "only to dogs" has topped New Zealand
record charts is a telling commentary on the times.
