Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a few days visiting Dr Mohan
Lal Kapur (MLK) at his home in Suffolk, Virginia. Some of you might
remember him from RMIM meetings or from the songs from his collection
posted by Surjit Singh on his website. I was accompanied by a friend
Devendra (Dave) Kochhar. MLK had extended this invitation at the last
RMIM meeting held in Cupertino, CA. Let me say at the very outset: if
you are ever invited by MLK, jump at the opportunity. He has a huge
house, the biggest in the mohalla (where he lives alone), with five
large rooms filled with Indian music and videos (CDs, audio tapes,
VCDs, DVDs), half a dozen large screen TVs, and all sort of recording
equipment. We got to see two full-length movies during our three-day
stay: Dastaan (Suraiya, Raj Kapoor) and Tansen (KL Sehgal and
Khursheed). We also watched a large number of video songs, mostly from
the thirties and forties (MLK's favorite eras). While I was getting
impressed by his vast collection of music and videos, Dave was
drooling at the furnishings in his home, tables with precious-stone
inlays imported from Karnataka, the finest carpets, door stops of pure
silver, etc. But the BEST PART OF THE VISIT, without a doubt, was the
delicious food. MLK is a wonderful cook as all food is cooked with
freshly ground spices (he even grinds his own turmeric and besan). His ...
